4th Century BC
400 BC - 100 BC
During this period in time the Celts / Celtoi / Keltoi were to stand out in history, due to their
particular Cultural way of life, their political
organisation, and their appearance, and they were
to be among the 4 great Peoples of the then known World, which also included the
Scythians,
the Persians, and the
Libyans, and from now on the Celts were to become dominant from Spain to Turkey and were to
also besiege Rome
and Greece and become the overlords of the Iberians in the north and the west of
Spain where the 2 cultures were to combine to become known as the Celtiberians.
391 BC The Romans betrayed the
Celts during the
siege on Clusium, and the Celts under Brennus then marched on Rome without stopping anywhere along
the way, and defeated those Romans who were still left in charge there in a single battle, and
they stayed there for a year and demanded a great fine for the original Roman treachery at Clusium, and
then left Rome with a Peace Treaty in place.
387 BC
On the Continent the Celts who went into battle naked, because of the terror
they inspired in the opposition along with their War - Cry were in control of
Rome and because of
this began to take up
Latin as their other language,
just as the Teutonic Scandinavian
Goths were to make their first appearance
also into
recorded history.
369 BC - 368 BC
During this period in time many Celts also journeyed to the south - east, to
serve as mercenaries in the
Peloponnese, but even
prior to this there had already been considerable Celtic migration into the
Balkans, and there were also Celtic mercenaries from Gaul
(France and part of Spain) in the army of Syracuse.
At this time also the Celts who were still allied with the
Greeks
against the Persians and the Phoenicians, overrun Pannonia securing it from the
Illyrians. The Celts in Gaul were the Aedui, Lexovii, Lemovises, Santones, Remi,
and the Treveri who abolished their Kingships and instead the aristocratic
warrior nobles elected a Vergobret / magistrate as they had the overall power
through their hereditary aristocratic ancestors.
335 BC
Alexander - the Great, while in Bulgaria, received a deputation of
Celts from the Lower Danube who were from the Adriatic.
334 BC Alexander - the Great this year made an
alliance with the Celts, which kept his
particular region safe during his expedition into Asia.
