551 - 559 AD
551 AD ? 94.St. Columbcille (Dove of the Church) / St. Columba was born who was from the Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill Cenel Conaill Sept who would not only promote many of the monasteries throughout Ireland, but also on Iona, in Scotland and England, before his death in 597 AD.
St. Brendan - the Navigator returned to Ireland.
551 / 554 AD David, a son of Guaire a descendant of Farranan, Bishop of Ard Macha in Co. Armagh in the Ulster Province and Legate of Ireland, died.
552 AD St. Colmac constructed a church on Middle Island / Inishmaan / Inish Meain in Loch Mask in Co. Mayo in the mid- west of the Connacht Province, which would be enlarged later on and then burnt down in 1227 AD after the Anglo - Norman Invasion.

At this time the Heberian Cianachta Luigne Sept and the Heberian Cianachta Gailenga Sept had their territory in Co. Mayo and Co. Sligo in the west of the Connacht Province where they were originally based on the Fir Bolg Septs from Brega in the south - east of Northern Leinster, together with the Saithne Sept nearby from Glasnevin in Co. Dublin in the north - east of Southern Leinster to Loch Ramor in Co. Cavan in Southern Ulster where the Kingships up until the Anglo - Norman English Invasion were to be interchangeable. The vassal Septs in Co. Longford and Co. Westmeath in the west of Northern Leinster, and in Co. Offaly nearby in the north - west of Southern Leinster, were the Delbna, the Corco Roide and the Cuircne, among others.
The
Battle of Cuilen occurred
in which
the Corco Oche
of Mumu
perished through the intercession of Ita of
Cluain Credail.
553 / 558 AD 93.Eochy / Eochaidh the Gaelic Milesian Irian 4th King of Ulaid and 4th Irian Dal nAraidi King, died, who is the direct male line ancestor of the Ui Echach Ulaid Sept, whose father was 92.Condlae / Conlaedh who had been the previous 2nd Dal nAraidi King who was a son of *91.Coelub one of the three 3 sons of 90.Crond Ba Drui, the direct ancestor of the Dal nAraidi and the Ui Echach Cobo Septs in the north - east of the Ulster Province, descended from 83.Fiacach Aruidhe the direct male line ancestor of the Dal nAraidi Sept, who was descended himself from *62.Rory Mor who had been the standout Gaelic Milesian 86th King of Tara / Erinn and therefore from 37.Ir. (Irians.)
92.Fergnae now became the Heremonian Dal Fiatach 5th King of Ulaid in the north - east of Ulster Province, who was a son of 91.Angus / Oengus Ibdach, one of the 2 sons of 90.Forgg mac Dallain the ancestor of the Dal Fiatach Septs descended originally from their direct male line ancestor Fiatach Fionn mac Daire who had been the Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh 103rd King of Tara / Ireland from 36 AD - 39 AD.
Bec, the son of Deiche, died. Criffan / Crimthann the son of Brion, died.
St. Finnian, of Moville in Tyrconnell / Tir Connell / Co. Donegal in the north - west of the Ulster Province and nearby Cille Drivne in Co. Sligo in the north - west of Connacht Province, had previously returned from his second journey to Rome with a rare manuscript that was a translation of the Vulgate of St. Jerome and he lent it to 94.St. Columbcille to read, who also copied it down without his permission so St. Finnian demanded the copy / Cathach back also, but 94.St. Columbcille would not give it up, so they both had *93.Diarmait mac Carroll, the Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Ui Felim Dal Cuinn "southern" Ui Niaill Cenel Cremthainne 133rd King of Tara / Ireland settle their dispute, who gave the judgement in St. Finnian's favour, basing his decision on the fact that; "A calf belongs to the owner of the cow." This decision did not go down too well with 94.St. Columb Cille.
94.Columb Cille placed some of St. Patrick's relics in a shrine at this time, which was by now 60 years after his previous demise, that including his goblet, Angel's Gospel and the Bell of Testament in a burial place, but the Goblet eventually went to Dun, the Bell to Ard Macha in Co. Armagh in the Uster Province and Angel's Gospel to 94.Columbcille.
554 AD Lughaidh mac Ochae, was born. A Leprosy / Samthrose outbreak occurred.
555 / 560 / 561 AD 94.St. Columbcille who was from the Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Ui Felim Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill Cenel Conaill Sept in the north - west of the Ulster Province was also to be further upset with another of *93.Diarmait mac Carroll's decisions during a Festival held at Tara where all of the Gaelic Milesian Septs had gathered together subject to a truce. 97.Curnan, a son of 96.Aed mac Echach the Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Ui Felim Dal Cuinn Ui Briuin Ai 8th King of Connacht was to kill another youth who was in attendance there, thereby breaking the truce during the Festival / Feis, and he then fled to 94.St. Columbcille for protection. He was then pulled from his hands and executed by the command of *93.Diarmait mac Carroll and this added further to the mixed emotions that already existed among the other Dal Cuinn Septs towards *93.Diarmait mac Carroll and this was to bring on the Battle of Cooldrumman / Cul Dreimhne in Co. Sligo in the north - west of the Connacht Province between the various Dal Cuinn Septs who were to be involved in the conflict there in which 3,000 were to be slain and *93.Diarmait mac Carroll was to be defeated. 97.Curnan's father, 96.Aed mac Echach the Ui Briuin Ai 8th King of Connacht, a son of 95.Eochy Tirmcharna was also joined by*94.Fergus and *94.Donnell the 2 sons of *93.Murtough mac Ercae who had been the previous Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill Cenel nEogain 131st King of Tara / Ireland, who were the heirs apparent / Tanaistes to the Kingship of Ireland. 94.St. Columbcille also encouraged his Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill Cenel Conaill Sept, led by his kinsmen the 2 second - cousins,*94.Ainmire who was another "northern" Prince / Tanaiste and heir apparent, and 93.Ninnid, to go up against *93.Diamait also, along with 3,000 members of the various Dal Cuinn Septs. The territory in which the battle occurred belonged to the Dal Cuinn "southern" Ui Niaill in the kingdom of Cairpre Droma Cliab belonging to the Cenel Cairpre who were originally descended from 91.Cairpre another son of *90.Niall - of the Nine Hostages, which was situated below the Ben Bulben Mountain. This was to bring about the greatest defeat ever for *93.Diarmait mac Carroll the "southern" Ui Niaill Cenel Cremthainne 133rd King of Tara / Ireland who had come under the influence of the Druids again, and Fraochain, a son of Teininen, to create a Druidic fence and Tuatan, the son of Diman, the son of Saran, the son of Cormac, the son of Eogan had then cast the Druid fence between them and Maglaine had then leapt over the fence and he alone had been killed.
In later Centuries when the Connacht Province was to be in the ascendant, the divided north - western territory in Co. Sligo of 91.Cairbre's / Cairpre's Droma Cliab "southern" Ui Niaill kingdom was to be cut off by the Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Ui Felim Dal Cuinn Ui Briuin Breifne Sept from it's southern half, that was situated nearby in Co. Longford in the north - west of Northern Leinster, and it was to be then claimed by the Heremonian Dal Cuinn Ui Briuin Septs in Connacht although by custom it had been an ancient fifth of Connacht with it's border with the Ulster Province at the River Drowes, a few miles to the north of Drumcliff. This was to force the Kings from 91.Cairpre's Droma Cliab kingdom to then move in alongside their Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill kinsmen in the nearby Ulster Province and their Cenel Cairpre Droma Cliab kingdom there always remained in dispute right on down to the 16th Century AD.
555 / 558 AD 94.Colman Mor the Dal Cuinn 6th King of Meath, who was one of the 3 sons of *93.Diarmait mac Carroll the "southern" Ui Niaill Cenel Cremthainne 133rd King of Tara / Ireland, was killed in his chariot by Dubhshlat O Treana from the Gaelic Milesian Irian Sept who had his territory in the north - east of the Ulster Province and 94.Colman Mor was to go on to become the direct male line ancestor of the Clann Cholmain Sept who were to continue to be among the Kings of Meath who would basically follow on from *93.Diarmait Derg mac Carroll to be in solid also as the future Dal Cuinn "southern" Ui Niaill Cenel Cholmain Kings of Ireland, before the rise of their kinsmen the Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill Cenel nEogain Sept descending from 91.Eogan, the son of *90.Niall - of the Nine Hostages, who had been the 1st King of Ailech. Another of the 3 sons of *93.Diarmait was 94.Colman Bec who is the direct male line ancestor of the Caille Follamain Sept who were not to produce any Kings of Ireland at all, but his youngest son, 94.Aed Slaine who was their half - brother was to become the joint 141st King of Tara / Ireland and the direct male line ancestor of the Siol nAedo Slaine Sept who would produce 9 Kings of Ireland in their own right.
555 AD / 559 AD Bangor / Beannchar monastery on the coast in Co. Down in the north - east of the Ulster Province situated on the outer shore of Belfast Loch was founded by St. Comgall, who had been born near Black Head and it was to become so famous as a pious learning centre that over time students and teachers from many distant parts were to attend there, with up to 3,000 at a time and many of his disciples were to leave from the shore nearby in their currachs (boats) to promote Christianity on the Continent and throughout the west of Europe, such as St. Columbanus (543 - 615 AD) and St. Gall. From 824 AD on because it was such a pious institution it would come under constant attack from the Viking raiders with 3,000 being slain there just on one occasion while having no means of defending themselves. The Franciscan Order was to re - establish there later on and the region there was to become part of the territory of the O Neills of the Clann na Bhuidhe / Clannaboy to then be taken over in the early 17th Century during the confiscation of the 3,500,000 acres of the Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Ui Felim Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill territories by the English for foreign non - Catholic plantations. The Irish Families were to be then driven off above the 600' level to starve to death, while the territory there was given over to James Hamilton / Howard to be planted with English non - Catholics along the rivers and the Lowland Presbyterian Scotch in behind them.
Cath Dubh, the son of Fergus, who was the Bishop of Achad Cinn in Co. Antrim in the north - east of the Ulster Province at this time, died who was of a very great age.
556 / 558 / 560 / 561 / 562 AD *93.Diarmait mac Carroll the Heremonian Dal Cuinn "southern" Ui Niaill Cenel Cremthainne 133rd King of Tara / Ireland revived the ancient Orce Feis (A Celtic Festival were the Irish King was previously married to the land, which had been abandoned under the sway of Christianity and this was to be the last time it was held at Tara in Northern Leinster, as *93.Diarmait was to have many conflicts with the priests and the monks from now on as he continued to try and revert to the old Celtic ways. The Battle of Cuil Unsenn also occurred this year when Aed mac Brendan / Brenainn the Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Dal Cuinn "southern" Ui Niaill King of Tethbae in the west of Midhe / Meath in Northern Leinster (Maelcha's son)? drove off the belligerent *93.Diarmait mac Carroll whose time was now running out.
*93.Diarmait mac Carroll the Dal Cuinn "southern" Ui Niaill Cenel Cremthainne 133rd King of Tara / Ireland besieged the monastery at Lorrha, which was situated on the border of the Munster Province under the care of St. Ruadan / Rowan who was from the Heberian Eoghanachta Sept who was already hostile to the Dal Cuinn "southern" Ui Niaill and *93.Diarmot seized Aed Guarie, a Prince / Tanaiste of the Heremonian Dal Cuinn Colla Da Crioch Ui Maine Sept in the east of the Connacht Province who had been seeking sanctuary there, and also had him put to death. St. Ruadan had St. Brendan of Birr and some of the other monks, retaliate by carrying out a fast against *93.Diarmot mac Carroll outside of his fortress at Tara were they also put a curse on him. To try and counteract any effects their fast might produce *93.Diarmait carried out one of his own also, so St. Ruadan then had one of his own followers dress to look like him who then made sure that *93.Diarmait was able to see him having a meal, and *93.Diarmait by then requiring sustenance broke his own fast by doing the same. St. Ruadan then placed a curse not only on *93.Diarmait, but also on the royal fortress at Tara in Meath, which was to soon occur. and just become an overgrown grass area / fuit Iliium where the original rath (fort) of *91.Laoghaire the original Heremonian Dal Cuinn "southern" Ui Niaill 129th King of Tara / Ireland (another of the 8 sons of *90.Niall - of the Nine Hostages the 126th King of Tara / Ireland), now lies in ruins.
94.St. Columbcille / St. Columba was to establish 37 monasteries altogether, from Derry in the north - east of the Ulster Province to his new one this year at Durrow / Daire Magh / The Plain of the Oaks in Co. Offaly in the mid - west of Southern Leinster. Among the other monasteries he founded was one at Drumcliff in Co. Sligo in the north - west of the Connacht Province, which is now a total ruin and another at Swords / Sord on the River Ward in Co. Dublin in the north - east of Southern Leinster were he put in St. Finnian Lobar - the Leper as the Abbott in charge. Another was on Lambay Island near Dublin and another on Tory Island in the north - west, off the coast of Tyrconnell / Co. Donegal, and also at Fahan in the north - west of Ulster where St. Mura was the Abbot and where his Holy Well is still there to see today. It was all in aid of his ongoing repentance for being involved in the terrible loss of life at the Battle of Cooldrumman, but he still retained the copy he had made of the Vulgate of St. Jerome, that was to become a symbol of defiance for his kinsmen the Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill Cenel Conaill Sept to be known as the Cathach of St. Columba as it would always be carried by this Sept into battle.(It is still in existence in the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin, while the Shrine that originally covered it, is still to be seen in the Irish National Museum).
This year the mortality rate in Cron Conaill / Inbuide Chonaill was great.
557 AD 92.Fergnae the Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Dal Fiatach 5th King of Ulaid in the north - east of the Ulster Province, died this year, who was the son of 91.Angus / Oengus Ibdach, one of the 2 sons of 90.Forgg mac Dallain the male line ancestor of the Heremonian Dal Fiatach Septs, whose territory was at Craeb Tulcha in the north of Co. Down in the south - east of Ulster and his demise was to end his particular male line to the Kingship, but the Dal Fiatach Septs would continue to produce 58 Kings of Ulaid mainly through his uncle, 91,Murray / Muireadach Muinderg who had been the Dal Fiatach 1st King of Ulaid, who had been a brother to his father, 91.Angus Ibdach. 93.Demman became the new Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Dal Fiatach 6th King of Ulaid in the north - east of the Ulster Province who was a son of 92.Cyril / Cairell who had been the previous 3rd King of Ulaid and another one of the 2 sons of 91.Murray / Muireadach Muinderg the other son of 90.Fogg mac Dallain.
558 / 565 AD The prophet Becc mac De had foretold that 93.Aed Dubh - of Dark Complexion mac Sweeney a Gaelic Milesian Irian Dal nAraidi Prince, who was a son of 92.Sweeney / Suibhne nAraide, a grandson of 90.Crond Ba Drui, who had been fostered by *93.Diarmait mac Carroll the "southern" Ui Niaill Cenel Cremthainne 133rd King at Tara / Ireland, would eventually kill *93.Diarmait, and because of this prophesy *93.Diarmait had banished the young Dal nAraidi Prince from Ireland and also St. Ruadan who was now totally against *93.Diarmait had also prophesied that a ridge pole in *93.Diarmait's roof would fall on him, so he had it removed from the building and thrown into the sea. *93.Diarmait feeling under siege now from all sides then sought the protection and assistance of his Druids and as the King of Tara / Ireland also begun a circuit to boost his confidence, and began travelling around Ireland, going from Tara in Co. Meath in Northern Leinster down into Southern Leinster, then into the Munster Province, the Connacht Province and back up north to the Ulster Province were all these prophesies were to soon come to pass. While in Ulster, *93.Diarmait was to stay with Banban at Rath Bec / Beag (The Small Ring Fort) in the territory of Magh Line between Raith Mor, which was also the chief seat of the Dal nAraidi Sept, situated only a few miles east of what is now the town of Antrim. During the feasting Banban informed *93.Diarmait that he had only recently built this particular house because he had found a large ridge pole in the sea, and just as he finished speaking the young 93.Aed Dubh mac Sweeney came in seeking his opportunity for revenge and speared *93,Diarmait. As *93.Diarmait fell to the ground he reached out for something to hold onto and the post gave way and the roof caved in and the ridge poll came down on him hitting him on the head and finished him off and although he had surrounded himself with his Druids, it had done him no good in the end. Under Celtic tradition,*93.Diarmait mac Carroll's head was taken to the Clonmacnoise monastery in Co. Offaly in the north - west of Southern Leinster and interred there, while his body was interred nearby at Connor in Co. Antrim in the north - east of the Ulster Province.
The Dal Cuinn "southern" Ui Niaill Cenel Cremthainne Siol nAedo Slaine Sept and the Dal Cuinn Cenel Cremthainne Clann Cholmain Sept where now to be *93.Diarmait mac Carroll's main descendents who would both leave future Kings of Ireland, as they are descended from 2 of his 3 sons. *94.Aed Slaine would become the future joint 141st King of Ireland and would also at first leave the Siol nAedo Slaine Kings of Brega, then the Kings of Lagore / South Brega and the Kings of Knowth / North Brega down to *104. Congalach Cnogba / Knowth who would become the 163rd King of Ireland who was to die in 956 AD. Due to her having no children of her own, Mugain the second wife of *93.Diarmait mac Carroll had been humiliated by Eithne his chief wife who was the mother of his 2 older sons, 94.Cholman Mor and 94.Colman Bec. but Mugain had then been cured by St. Finnian of Mag Bile of her barrenness and had given birth to the young *94.Aed Slaine. (Mugain was the daughter of Conchrad mac Duach from the Ui Duach Sept in the Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Ui Connla kingdom of Ossory in Co. Kilkenny in the south - west of Southern Leinster).
94.Colman Mor, the older son, would leave the Clann Cholmain Kings of Midhe / Meath and eventually the Kings of Ireland beginning with *100.Donnell Midi who wouild become the Gaelic Milesia Heremonian Dal Cuinn "southern" Ui Niaill Cenel Cremthainne 161st King of Ireland in 739 AD, down to *107.Malachy 11 / Maelsechlainn the 174th King of Ireland who would die in 1022 AD well before the Anglo - Norman English Invasion, 94.Colman Bec, his other son, was to become the direct male line ancestor of the Caille Follamain Sept who were to rule over their territory around Fore, situated between Meath and Brega in the south - east of Northern Leinster, but they would not produce any aristocratic warrior Kings of Ireland.
Previously *93.Diarmait mac Carroll the recently deceased Dal Cuinn "southern" Ui Niaill 133rd King of Tara / Ireland had taken no part in the Battle of Moin Daire Lothair in the Ulster Province where the Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill Sept were now strongly set up and growing in greater importance, as they had already been able to submit the Gaelic Milesian Irian Dal nAraidi Sept who had their territory nearby to the west of the River Bann in the eastern kingdom of Ulaid and they had then expanded their territory further in Co. Derry in Northern Ulster, and during this particular battle 7 of the Irian Dal nAraidi Kings were killed, while Eochy / Eochaidh Laeb had been able to escape in his chariot.
With the demise of *93. Diarmait mac Carroll the "southern" Ui Niaill Dal Cuinn 133rd King of Tara / Ireland the palace of Tara in Co. Meath in the south - east of Northern Leinster was to be virtually abandoned as the aristocratic warrior Royal seat of the Gaelic Milesian Kings and there are now only the remains of the oval shaped Rath na Riogh (The Fort of the Kings) there, which was the largest rath being 980’ x 800’ with the Forradh / Teach Cormaic (Cormac's House) inside of it. (The earthen works of the Forradh is all that is left of it at Tara today.) On the site of the Teach Cormaic also is the relocated standing Lia Fail Stone (The Crowning Stone of the Irish Kings of Ireland). Originally brought into Ireland by the Tuatha de Danann Sept it was to be eventually put in its present position to mark the graves of those who were to be killed in the distant future during the Irish Insurrection in 1798 AD to commemorate the deaths there of those United Irishmen, who gave their all against the continuing ethnic and religious repression of those in authority in England. (Initially it had been situated on The Mound of the Hostages / Duma na nGiall further to the north). The Rath na Seanaid (The Fort of the Synod) is situated on the highest part of Tara to the north of Rath na Riogh were it would be destroyed in the late 19th Century AD by some people who were by then seeking the Ark of the Covenant. The Teach Miodhchuarta (The Banqueting Hall) was 750' x 90' long and was made up of 2 long parallel banks described in the Book of Leinster, and also in the 15th Century AD in the Yellow Book of Lecan written by the Mac Firbishes / Forbes of Connacht Province. The Rath Grainne is north - west of the Teach Miodhchuarta and is named after 86.Grainne (Grace) the daughter of *85.Cormac mac Airt the previous Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Ui Felim Dal Cuinn 115th King of Tara / Ireland, and it is also possibly a burial ground. (Nearby there are 2 Claoin Fearta (sloping trenches) on the hill side, which also may have been burial sites). Situated in the churchyard are 2 x Standing Stones, one is of limestone with a rounded top, while the other is Adomnan's Stone, which is 5 1/2' above the ground level with a relief cut into it of Cernunnos the horned god of the Celts. South of Tara is Rath Medb, which is a hill fort surrounded by a single bank 750' in diameter. (All of these constructions on Tara are known as the Dinnshenchas).
St. Brendan / Brenainn - the Navigator also established an Abbey at Clonfert / Cluain Ferta (The Meadow of the Grave) and another at Annagh Down near Loch Corrib with both situated in Co. Galway in the south - west of the Connacht Province and others at Ardfert, and Brandon in Co. Kerry in the south - west of the Munster Province where the ruins of the Cathedral are still there to be seen and also his Holy Mountain. He had also set sail to America with his disciples in 3 open wicker boats covered in ox skins known as currachs on a journey, which was to last for 7 years while endeavouring to spread Christianity. The Co. Kerry Peninsular / Ros is at the mouth of the River Kenmare were the smugglers boats in the future were to take the Irish to France and Spain to the Catholic seminaries for the priesthood and education during the hundreds of years of English ethnic and religious repression.
Bec, son of De who was a prophet, died.
558 / 559 / 560 AD 88.Gabhran the Heremonian Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill Cenel nEogain Scottii King of Dal Riada, died, who was a son of 87.Domangart the previous King of Dal Riada whose original territory had been at first in Co. Antrim in the north - east of the Ulster Province and later Argyle (The Land of the Gael) and Albany in the Scottish Highlands.
559 AD St. Dermot built a monastery at Inish Clothran in Co. Westmeath in the south - west of Northern Leinster, which is an island on Loch Ree on which there still exists today the ruins of 6 Churches, and it was also there on that site in the 1st Century AD that 76.Queen Maeve / Medb of Connacht Province had been slain by a stone from a slingshot while she was bathing.
559 AD - 561 / 565 AD *94.Donnell / Domhnall Ilchelgach and *94.Fergus / Forggus his brother, were to be the joint Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill Cenel nEogain 134th Kings of Ireland, who were the sons of *93.Murtaugh mac Ercae the previous 131st King of Tara / Ireland, the son of 92.Murray / Muireadach the 2nd King of Ailech, the son of 91.Eogan the 1st King of Ailech, one of the 8 sons of *90.Niall - of the Nine Hostages the 126th King of Tara / Ireland and the direct male line ancestor of all of the "southern" and "northern" Ui Niaill Septs. They had previously been the joint 4th Kings of Aileach in the central - north of the Ulster Province. Both of them also had been among the Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill victors previously during the Battle of Cuil Dreimne (Cooldrumman) against *93.Diarmait mac Carroll the 133rd King of Tara / Ireland, but they were only to rule at Tara for just over a year. *94.Donnell Ilchelgach's individual male line was to now continue on down to *111.Murtogh / Muirchertach Mac Loughlin / Lochlainn who was to be the future "northern" Ui Niaill 55th / 57th King of Aileach and Gaelic Milesian Heremonian Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill Cenel nEogain 182nd King of Ireland who would die in 1166 AD prior to the Anglo Norman English Invasion. (*94.Fergus / Forggus his brother, was to leave no aristocratic warrior issue to the Kingship).
