ABSORPTION: Nutrients are absorbed only through the Gastrointestinal Tract with food and drink taken in the Mouth passing down the Oesophagus to reach the Stomach where no significant absorption takes place except for Alcohol and simple sugars such as Glucose absorbed into the Bloodstream through the Stomach Wall. After a period of Digestion in the Stomach the Nutrients move to the Small Intestine comprised of the Duodenum, the Jejunum and the Ileum all one continuous tube about 22' / 6 metres long. The inside Wall of the Small Intestine has a multitude of small finger - like projections with tiny Blood Vessels in them. It is in the Small Intestine that absorption of the food takes place as the Nutrients pass through the thin Membrane covering the Folds and enters the Blood Vessels lying underneath. This is also where many of the Drugs are absorbed but they can also be absorbed through the Skin, as well as through the Mucous Membranes of the Eyes, Mouth, Nose, Rectum and Vagina.
