ATAXIA: Symptoms: Muscular in - co - ordination, while attempting voluntary movement. Cause: Lesions within the Brain and Spinal Cord of the Central Nervous System.

ATHEROSCLEROSIS: Cause: a form of Arteriosclerosis, which see - with the smooth Internal Lining of the Arteries becoming covered with yellowish Fatty patches / plaques / Atheromas that narrow the size of the vessels. This can create Thrombosis and further narrow the Arterial size internally and block them completely. Excessive consumption of Animal Fats and refined Carbohydrates, raised Blood Pressure, Smoking, Tobacco and a lack of physical exercise are the main cause.

AZOTURIA: Horses: Cause: A concentration of Lactic Acid in the Tissues similar to Tying Up or Founder due to a lack of exercise. Hosing down the quarters and over the Kidneys with cold water after exertion closes the pores too quickly and can cause a mild case. Also may be caused by a day off when a fit Horse is on heavy grain feed, but also due to unfit Horses that are worked too hard or for too long or are under stress. Symptoms: Slight stiffness in the Hind Quarters right through to a reluctance to move with sweating and pain as the Lactic Acid is released and Muscle Cramps and damage occurs. If there is Cell damage the Urine will be dark coloured. Kidney damage can also occur and be irreparable. Mares with a nervous disposition are more prone to Tying Up. Treatment: Stop the work if Tying Up or further damage will occur to the Muscles. Give Rescue Remedy immediately and in Summer cool down by hosing and if it is cold weather then keep rugged. Drench: 200ml of Rosehips Tea and 200ml of Celery Seed Tea for a 450 kg Horse as it is high in Vitamin C specific for stress. Celery is a natural Diuretic and encourages Horses to drink, Urinate and remove Acidity. Mild Cases: Turn out in a grassy paddock to allow natural exercise. Sever Cases: Give Rescue Remedy and also give non - Steroidal anti - Inflammatory Drugs or Aspirin to alleviate the symptoms. Herbs: Devil's Claw or White Willow in Extract form and as a follow up treatment, and continue with Rescue Remedy and Rosehips Tea on an hourly basis for severe cases and 3 times a day for mild cases. Dehydration: After bad attacks natural Electrolytes can be syringed into the Mouth using Dandelion Extract diluted in water. Give 2ml to 10ml depending on the size of the Horse and amount of dehydration. Always reduce Energy / Protein feed on the days off. Warm up and cool down properly and do not work hard for the whole session and include a few walk intervals building the fitness level gradually. Walking: Take 20 minutes to warm the Muscles. Cooling Out: 10 minutes of walking depending on the weather and fitness. Tying Up: Do not feed Bran as it contains Phytate, which inhibits Calcium uptake in the Metabolism. Provide Rock Salt in the feed 1 x Tablespoon high grade Dolomite twice daily. 1 Tablespoon Tasmanian Seaweed twice daily and dampen with 50ml of Apple Cider Vinegar diluted in water for a 450 kg Horse and the Calcium, Potassium and Sodium prevents Azoturia. Selenium also assists, which is in Seaweed and Garlic. Vitamin E also assists and is present in Black Sunflower Seeds. Prone to Tying Up: Feed Corn Oil, whole Barley that has been simmered for an hour to open the husks, Sunflower Seeds and Cold Pressed Linseed Oil or Boiled Linseeds. Porridge: 1 Cup French White Millet and a ½ x  Cup of whole Linseeds boiled daily for 450 Kg Horse.
