Mac Elderry or Mac Ilderry - Irish / Mheic Giolla Dorcha - dorca (dark). A Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in Co. Tyrone in Central Ulster and are now also in Co. Antrim in the north - east of Ulster Province.

 

Mac Eldowney - Irish / Mheic Giolla Domhnaigh (Descended from a son of the devotee of the Church) A Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in Co. Derry in the north - east of the Ulster Province. Mac Gildowney and Muldowney were also used as variants in Co. Down in the south - east of Ulster. See also Moloney.

Elgee. Lady Wilde / Speranza nee Jane Francesca Elgee (1824 - 1896) was born in Co. Wexford in the south - east of Southern Leinster was the mother of Oscar Wilde and wrote for the Young Ireland  movement in The Nation newspaper.

Mac Elhair - Irish / Mheic Giolla Chathair (Descended from a son of a devotee of St. Cathair) Mac Ilhair, Mac Ilcar and Kilcarr were used in Co. Donegal in the north - west of the Ulster Province. Carr was also used as a synonym for them.

Mac Elheron or Mac Ilheron or Mac Leheron or Mac Heron - Irish / Mheic Giolla Chiarain (Descended from the Son of a devotee of St. Kieran) A Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in the east of the Ulster Province.

Ellife or Liffe. Scandinavian English names used as variants of Ayliff, which see in Co. Westmeath in the south - west of Northern Leinster.

 

Mac Elligot or Fitz Elyoth. Originally known as Fitz Elias. Cambro - Norman origins. Gaelicized - Irish / Mheic Uileagoid in Co. Kerry in the south - west of Desmond / Southern Munster since the Mid - 13th Century AD and in 1455 AD some were known as Fitz Elyoth.

 

Mac Elligott or Mac Elligot or Mac Eillgodd or Mac Ellycudd or Mac Ellycuddy or Mac Kilgol or Mac Leod or Mac Ellcole or Mac Elliott or Archdeacon. Heberian Eoghanacht Chaisil Sept of the O Sullivan Mor / Mac Gillycuddy Sept, which see. In 1653 AD Edmund Mac Elligott was transplanted from Co. Kerry in Desmond / Southern Munster. Originally there territories were Ardballa, Ardea, Ballyelegot in Co. Waterford. Ballynaelligott,  Ballynagrillagh, Bodenesmeen, O Brennan, Carriganass, Carrignafeela, Carrnebeg, Castlecurrig, Coolceragh, Dunboy, Dunkerron, Dunloa, Galey, Glaunageenty, Gloghanmackin, Cappanacuss, Carrick, Glandovellaney, Lisardbouly, Rathanny, Reendshart, Tourreagh, Tullygaron / Chute Hill, In 1590 AD they were last in the Barony of Trughanacmy / Trughenacking in Ballymacelligot. They had 4 Castles, Ballynaelligott, Carrignafeela, Ardballa, and Ballynagrillagh. In 1595 AD the Lord of the Reeks of Bodevysmine was slain in the Desmond Wars. In 1598 AD their territories were confiscated by the English and given to the Barretts while some were restored to them. 1604 AD John Mac Elligott was pardoned by James 1st the King of England. 1605 AD Theobold Burk of Castleconnell was given a portion of the territory of Mac Dermott O Sullivan aka Mac Gillicuddy who died in the Irish Rebellion. 1613 AD Ulick Mac Elligott's territory was given to Sir. T. Roper. 1624 AD An Inquisition was held on Maurice Mac Elligott's Estates. 1625 AD He was pardoned and allowed to give John Mac Gillicuddy his nephew, Tullygaron, Lisardbouly, Glandovellaney and Tourreagh that was to pass per a Miss Mac Elligott to the Chute branch. 1630 AD Conor Mac Gillicuddy of Carrig Castle in Co. Kerry was drowned at sea. In 1631 AD an Inquisition was held on John Mac Gillycuddys Estates. 1645 AD Miss Mac Gillicuddy was living in the castle of Ballingarry in Clanmorris when the property was confiscated by the Parliamentary Party. 1646 AD Col. Mac Gillicuddy and Col. Mac Elligott were 2 cousins at the Siege of Ballybriggan Castle near Tralee, In 1652 AD Mac Gillicuddy was taken prisoner at the Battle of Knocknacloghy. 1653 AD Edmund Mac Elligott was transplanted  and Maurice Mac Elligott lost O Brennan Castle. 1656 AD They also lost Ballynaelligott, Rathanny and Glaunageenty and were also transplanted. Richard Mac Elligott was in O Donoghue's Regiment when taken prisoner at the Siege of Limerick. 1673 AD Col. Mac Elligott and Teague Mac Elligott lost part of Cullenagh and Garrinagh, which was given over to Robert Marshall.

Mac Ellin - Irish / Mac Ailin. A Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in Co. Roscommon in the east of the Connacht Province. Not connected to the Mac Allens who were also there who were a galloglass / mercenary family.

Elliot or Elyot. English origins and cognate with Ellis. Some came into Ireland earlier, but most came after the confiscation of the 3,500,000 acres of the Heremonian Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill territories by James 1st the French Stuart English King and the foreign non - Catholic plantations there in the Ulster Province. They were in Co. Cavan and Co. Fermanagh in Southern Ulster and were later also nearby in Co. Leitrim in Northern Connacht


Ellis / Elias. English origins in Co. Dublin in the north - east of Southern Leinster in 1282 AD who were then known as Elys and are now mainly found in Co. Dublin still and also the Ulster Province.

 

Ellison. English origins came into Ireland in the early 17th Century AD.

Mac Ellistrum. Norman origins and may be a branch of the Geraldine / Fitz Geralds, which see, who also Gaelicized as Mheic Alastrum in Co. Kerry in the south - west of Desmond / Southern Munster.
