LOVAGE / Bladder Seed / Cornish Lovage / Garden Lovage / Italian Lovage / Love Parsley / Maggi Plant / Levisticum officinale / Umbelliferae/ Apiaceae. Eastern Mediterranean / Actions: Anti - Bacterial, Mildly Anti - Septic, Anti - Spasmodic, Carminative, Diuretic.

Cultivation: a small Perennial Celery like hardy deciduous herb or Garden Plant that is easy to grow with clumps of dark green, frond - like glossy compound Leaves 6- 75cm divided into diamond shaped leaflets and a thick taproot with flowering stalks 1 - 2m that bear flat umbels of white or green - white flowers above the foliage. Should be treated as an Annual plant grown in Sun or semi - shade in moist, moderately rich soil with Lime added if Acid and protect from the winds. Sow the seeds in Spring or Autumn direct in clumps 60cm apart or raise seedlings to transplant. When it dies back in Winter dig the Roots and it later re - emerges in early Spring. The Leaves, Seeds - Fruits & Stems have similar flavour to Celery and the same scent with the fresh Leaves & Stems used in Salads or cooked as a pot herb or added to Soups & Stews. The Young Stems can be candied the same as Angelica and the Dried Leaves & Seeds, whole or crushed are used also for flavouring.

    Used to Treat: Amenorrhoea: Bath: Leaves or a Decoction is used for its cleansing, deodorising and fresh scent or add 4 - 5 drops of Essential Oil to warm bath water. Or make a Decoction by steeping 30gm of chopped, peeled Root in 300ml of boiling water for 10 minutes and allow to cool, and strain before using. Bladder Infections: Colic - Infants: as a Tea for its comforting and warming effect. Complexion: Specific as an Infusion to wash. Digestion: Eyes: as a distilled water to remove redness and dimness. Flatulence: Specific to remove. Gastro - Intestinal Conditions: as it has a soothing and warming effect. Kidney - Stones: Pleurisy: if drunk 3 - 4 times. Skin: for its cleansing and deodorising effect or a Decoction made from the Leaves can be used to bleach, and also to remove Pimples. Stomach: soothing. Throat - Sore: as a Gargle as it is mildly Anti - Bacterial and Anti - Septic. Wounds and Grazes: with a strong Decoction of the Roots to cleanse and act as a Mild Anti - Septic.
