FEBRIFUGE: Reduces Feverish conditions. Herbs: Aconite - poisonous) Avens, Balm, Cayenne, Elder Flower, Gelsemium - poisonous) Lobelia - poisonous) Pennyroyal, Pleurisy Root, Wormwood and Yarrow. 

 

GALACTAGOGUES: Stimulates the flow of Breast Milk. Herbs: Aniseed, Goat’s Rue and Milk Thistle. 

 

HAEMOSTATIC: Checks Bleeding and aids with the Clotting of Blood. Herbs: Corn Ergot - Poisonous) Cranesbill and Turmeric. 

 

HEPATIC: Stimulates the Liver as a Liver Tonic. Herbs: Barberry, Blue Flag, Boldo, Chelidonium, Culver's Root, Dandelion, Dodder, Golden Seal, Wahoo and Yellow Toadflax.

 

HYDRAGOGUE: Induces watery Evacuation of the Bowels and expels surplus water from the Tissues and promotes Urination. Herbs: American Mandrake - Poisonous) Caroba and White Bryony. 

 

HYPNOTIC: Induces Sleep. Used for Insomnia. Herbs: Belladonna - Poisonous) Hemlock - Poisonous) Hops, Indian Hemp - Poisonous) Jamaican Dogwood, Mistletoe, Passionflower, Poppy - Poisonous) Scullcap, Stramonium - Poisonous) and Valerian. 

 

HYPOTENSIVES: Assists to normalize High Blood Pressure. Herbs: Garlic and Grindelia.  

       

INSECTICIDE: Kills Insects. Herbs: Derris Root, Musk Seed and Pyrethrum. 

 

IRRITANT: Causes irritation of the Tissues. Herbs: American Ivy, Bitter Apple - poisonous) Mustard, Poison Oak and Thuja. 

 

LAXATIVE: Induces easy Bowel action. Herbs: Barberry, Buckthorn, Cascara Sagrada, Dandelion, Linseed, Rhubarb, Senna, Slippery Elm and Yellow Dock. 

 

MYDRIATIC: Dilates the Pupil of the Eye. Herbs: Belladonna - Poisonous) and Stramonium - Poisonous). 

 

MYOTIC: Contracts the Pupil of the Eye. Herbs: Calabar Bean - Poisonous) and Opium - Poisonous). 

 

NARCOTIC: Induces Stupor and Insensibility.  

 

NEPHROTIC: Affects the Kidneys.  

 

NERVINE: Restores the Nerves to a Normal Tone. Benefits the Nervous System and with Alteratives Improve overall health and performance. They balance the Nervous System, so that energy is expended when required followed by relaxation. They lessen Symptoms and correct Causes at the same time.  Once the Nervous System is balanced there should be no need to administer further Nervine Herbs. Herbs: Avens, Chamomile, Centaury, Hops, Kola, Lady's Slipper, Mistletoe, Mother Wort, Mug Wort, Muira Puama, Passiflora, Passionflower, Scullcap, Valerian and Vervain. 

 

OXYTOCICS: Contracts the Uterus and hastens Childbirth. Stimulates Womb contraction. Herbs: Blue Cohosh, Golden Seal and Squaw Vine. 

 

PARASITICIDE: Kills or removes Body Parasites. Herbs: Aniseed, Cat's Claw, Cocculus Indicus - Poisonous) Rosemary, Thyme and Wormwood. N.B: Allow to steep in Wine for an hour or two then drink, as it will not keep. 

 

PARTURIENT: Used during Childbirth. Herbs: Cotton Root and Squaw Vine.  

 

PECTORAL: Taken Orally for Chest and Lung Disorders. Stengthens the Respiratory System and effective in Chest Conditions. Herbs: Coltsfoot, Comfrey, Elecampane and Golden Seal. 

 

PURGATIVE: Induces strong Bowel Evacuation. Herbs: Aloes, Bitter Apple - Poisonous) Greater Celandine, Jalap, Pumpkin Seed and Rhubarb Root. 

 

RESOLVENT: Reduces Swelling.

 

RUBEFACIENT:  Produces Inflammation of the Skin. Stimulates Circulation - Applied Externally to Stimulate and Increase Blood Supply to an area. N.B: They must be kept away from the Eyes, Mouth etc as they cause Redness and Irritation. N.B: Excessive use can cause Blistering. Herbs: Black Bryony, Cayenne, Croton - Poisonous) Ginger, Horseradish, Mustard and Turpentine. *Wintergreen added to other Oils is useful for treating Muscular Problems and carries the other Oils deep into Tissue, including the Hooves of Horses.

 

SEDATIVES: Placates Nerves. Reduces Nervous Tension and Stress - Relieves Insomnia.  Calms excited Nerve Signals, which manifest as a type of pain or discomfort to the over reactive Horse. Herbs: Black Cohosh, Hops, Passionflower, Skullcap and Valerian.  

 

SIALAGOGUES: Stimulates the Saliva Flow. Herbs: Cayenne (For Curries) Genetian, Ginger, Liquorice, Tamarind (Fruit used in Curries) and Turkey Root. (All differ in their properties.)  

 

STERNUTATORY: Causes violent Sneezing. Herbs: Black Pepper, Egyptian Soapwort Root and Soapwort.  

 

STIMULANT: Physiological Stimulant that promotes the reserve power of the Body producing Strength and Energy. Herbs: Bayberry, Cayenne, Ginger, Horseradish, Jaborandi - Poisonous) Kola, Mate Tea, Prickly Ash, Poplar, Tansy, Wintergreen and Wormwood

          

STOMACHIC: Allays Stomach Problems. 

 

STYPTIC: Aids with quick Clotting of the Blood. With Vulneraries used to resolve Bruising, which usually affects the Veins and often the Lymphatics. Applied as quickly as possible Externally. Arnica Ointment if the Skin is not Broken, Avens, Cranesbill Root, Lady's Mantle and Witch Hazel Ointment or Lotion if the Skin is Broken, and Calendula an anti - Septic should be used in conjunction whenever the Skin is Broken. Styptic Herbs including Yarrow are more strongly Astringent and are used to help to stop Bleeding from Arteries together with Physical Pressure.  

 

SUDORIFIC: Promotes profuse Perspiration. Herbs: Sarsparilla and Vervain. 

 

TONIC: Promotes Pep and Well Being. Herbs: Agrimony, Barberry, Damiana, Dandelion, Genetian, Kola, Prickly Ash, Quassia, Unicorn Root and Wormwood.  

 

VERMICIDES and VERMIFUGES: Kill and Expel Worms from the Body. Herbs: Black Horehound, Blue Cohosh, Butternut, Garlic, Goat's Rue, Horehound, Male Fern, Primrose, Rue, Tansy, Wormseed and Wormwood. Vermicides kill Worms in the Gut and elsewhere. · Vermifuges expel the Dead Parasites and any other associated Debris from the Body. These Herbs are strongly Bitter and distasteful to Worms as they are high in Tannin content from Astringency, which causes contractions of Intestinal Mucosa. N.B: *Aloes, Rue and Wormwood should not be used on Pregnant Mares because they stimulate Internal Muscles, which could cause Contractions. * Garlic is safe to use in Pregnant Mares but should be discontinued a month before and after foaling as it will taint the Milk. See Herbal Worming.

 

VULNERARY: Promotes the healing of external Wounds. Herbs: Aloe, Chickweed, Comfrey, Golden Seal, Marsh Mallow, Myrrh, St. John's Wort and Water Betony.
