Oils / Fats
*N.B: Excess Oil should not be fed to Horses, as they cannot easily Metabolize it as they do not have a Gall Bladder. Oils in moderation are beneficial, but do not feed Oils that are rancid!!
*N.B: Oils must be stored out of direct Sunlight.
*Keeps the Horse's Coats healthy and shiny and are useful as an Energy source for Horses who have slow exercise and also assist in transporting and absorbing Fat - Soluble Vitamins, Minerals and Protein.
Supplementary Feeds and Additives
Apple Cider Vinegar:
N.B: Always buy un - pasteurized and the best is the locally grown Organic variety with Sediment.
High in Potassium and also contains Boron, Chlorine, Fluorine, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus, Silica and Sulphur.
*Beneficial for the treatment and prevention of Arthritis and useful against Viral attacks as it is also high in Organic Acids. *Also useful in some cases of Scouring.
*It is also a Digestive aid and helps to maintain the correct pH / Acid - Alkaline balance in the Body.
*Apple Cider Vinegar / Potassium with natural Rock Salt / Sodium and high grade Dolomite / Calcium and Magnesium provide natural Electrolytes in an easy Metabolized form. *Dosage: 20 - 40ml diluted in water and added to the feed or can be increased if necessary. *Apple Cider Vinegar also has many External uses - See ACV under Herbs.
Cod Liver Oil
*Prevents Arthritis and assists in lessening its effect in many cases. Dosage: 10ml daily for all Horses 10 years and over and those with Injuries especially where it involves trauma to the Bone.
N.B: Do not feed Oils or Oil based feeds except those mentioned as others contain non - beneficial Fatty Acids that promote an Inflammatory response, pain and Tissue swelling or belong to the Trans - Fatty Acid group and are *Genetically modified from individual Oils.
Corn Oil
Dosage: 50ml for a 450 - 500 kg Horse.
Dolomite
*Natural Calcium and Magnesium combined, aiding absorption in the Gut as high grade Dolomite contains 63% Calcium Carbonate and 35% Magnesium and 2% Silica. *Dosage: 2 x Tablespoons a day for a 450Kg Horse.
Garlic
*Contains Boron, Copper, Chromium, Molybdenum, Selenium, Sulphur and Zinc.
*Sulphur balances out the effects of heavy metals, such as Cadmium & Lead making the Blood less palatable to biting Insects and is a natural Vermifuge making the Gut less attractive to Worms.
*Garlic is also a natural selective anti - Biotic destroying Pathogens and does not interfere with the beneficial Gut Flora. Dosage: 1 x Tablespoon of fresh dried granulated Garlic a day.
Honey
*Unprocessed raw Honey has a great array of Minerals and Vitamins, and preserves Calcium Metabolism in the Body. Dosage: 1 x Tablespoon to 2 1/2 Litres of water.
Molasses
Dosage: 1 x Tablespoon to 5 Litres of water to dampen down the feed. N.B: Excess Sugar causes Behavioural and Soundness problems.
Rock Salt
*Should be available to all Horses to provide Sodium in its Natural form taking it in as required and avoiding excess Salt so as not to upset the Electrolyte balance. Feeding Sodium and Potassium in its individual Natural form is the best way to balance these two Minerals.
N.B: Sodium Chloride / Salt does not achieve the same result as balanced Rock Salt and also does not allow for individual r Home Page equirements.
Seaweed Meal
*There are hundreds of different Seaweeds and the best of these is Brown Bull Kelp / Bladderwrack found in the deeper parts of the Ocean. It contains 26% of Mineral Salts in Organic form, which are easily Metabolized, and Alginates that are exceedingly high in Protein.
*The Mineral Salts are a vast array of common, rare and trace Minerals and the highest plant source of Iodine critical for Thyroid balance. Dosage: 1 x heaped Tablespoon / 15grm for 450Kg Horse. N.B: Do not feed in excess!!
*Ponies and Cross - Breds: Care must be taken with these as they have ferocious appetites.
*Some Horses are sensitive to Iodine, and other Mineral Supplements should be fed instead.
