O Kane or O Cain or O Cahan or O Keane - Irish / Ua Cathain / cath (battle). Important Heremonian Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill Cenel nEogain Clan Drugan Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in the east of Co. Donegal in the north - west of the Ulster Province, in Co. Derry in the north - east of Ulster and Co. Tyrone in Central Southern Ulster. They were also to be Princes / Tanaistes in Co. Derry and Kings and Chiefs eventually in the Routes in Co. Antrim in the kingdom of the Heremonian Dal Riada in the north - east of the Ulster Province, and had their castle there later on at Dunseverick / The Fort of Sobairce, which is only a ruin now. They eventually also became the Chiefs in the kingdom of Keenaught / Cianacht and they built an Augustinian monastery at Dungiven and had their stronghold at Limavady in Co. Derry overlooking the River Roe south of the town. Their original territory was at Laggan in the east of Co. Donegal where they settled in the Coleraine / Derry area. They were a leading Sept in Ulster up until the confiscation of the 3,500,000 acres of the Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Ui Felim Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill territories by the English in the early 17th Century AD and the non - Catholic plantations there. All of the Irish Septs there were then driven off above the 600' level to starve to death and just like so many of the other Irish Families they only survived as a Gaelic Milesian Sept until the 17th Century AD under the continuing English ethnic and religious oppression. The last of their Chiefs was to die in the Tower of London in 1628 AD. The Mac Closkeys and Mac Avinneys are 2 of the Ui Cathain Septs.

They also had the right, along with the O Hagans  (Cenel Fergusa) to inaugurate the "northern" Ui Niaill Cenel nEogain Kings on their Sacred Inauguration Mound at the Rath of Tullyhogue in the Ulster Province. Originally they had their territory at Coleraine in Co. Derry in the north - east of Ulster, but by the 11th Century AD they had their fort at Tullyhogue, which later remained the O Hagans main seat well after the "northern" Ui Niaill Cenel Eogain's main Septs / O Nialls / O - Mac Loughlans was to transfer to Dungannon in Co. Tyrone in the 13th Century AD. The burial place for all of the O Hagans was at Donaghrisk across the road from the fort, which was also the site of the Stone of the King / Leac na Ri were the "northern" Ui Niaill Kings swore to uphold the Brehon Law after a Mass was said by the Primate. As the main Ui Niaill sub - Chiefs the O Cains / O Kanes threw a golden sandal over the head of the proposed Cenel Eogain King, and the O Hagans who were the hereditary guardians placed the shoe on his foot while St. Patrick’s bell was rung. The last of the  "northern" Ui Niaill Kings to be inaugurated at Tullyhogue was 126.Aed Dubh / Black Hugh O Neill in 1595 AD who had previously been the English appointed Earl of Dungannon and Earl of Tyrone who eventually saw the light and rallied to the cause.

In 1602 AD Elizabeth's 1st's Lord Deputy, Mountjoy carrying out Eliabeth1st's "Slash & Burn" policies in Ireland destroyed the Heremonian Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill's Cenel nEogain Sacred Inauguration Stone and over the next few years the English also took out Attainders (Off with their Heads) against the main "northern" Ui Niaill Ulster Chieftains who had been the last  Gaelic Irish Chiefs to survive independently in Ireland. The English then confiscated a further 3,500,000 acres of the "northern" Ui Niaill territories for foreign non - Catholic plantations and drove the remaining members of each of the individual "northern" Ui Niaill Families and the other Irish Septs up above the 600' level to starve to death, who were then also denied any rights under English Common Law. They then put in non - Catholic English settlers along the rivers, and the Presbyterian Lowland Scots in behind them, but the "northern" Ui Niaill Septs nevertheless migrated back to their original Family regions as the English had taken so much territory that their Undertakers could not get enough labor to work all of the land they had confiscated. The Undertakers then had to put in the Irish as tenants pretending to those in control in England that they did not really exist as such. From 1534 AD until 1869 AD no Catholic Irish man or Irish woman legally existed under English Law in Ireland even though they were still the majority.
