Armagh and Co. Monaghan in the south - east of the Ulster Province. Variants were Mac Anully, Mac Enolly, and Mac Knally also used there and in the surrounding Counties.
Nally. Norman or Welsh origins in Co. Mayo in the mid - west of the Connacht Province where they became “More Irish than the Irish” after they Gaelicized their name.
Mac Nalty - Irish / Mheic Conallta / cu (hound or warrior) allta (wild). A Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in Northern Connacht and the surrounding regions in the nearby territory in the Ulster Province. Mac Analty also used as a variant.
Mac Nama - Irish / Mheic Connmeadha / con / cu (hound) meadha (place name). A Sept / Family branch, who had their territory in Co. Leitrim in Northern Connacht. Many are now known also as Conway.
Mac Namara - Irish / Cu na Mara - Warrior of the Sea who was 17th in descent from 91.Cas the King of Thomond, and he was also the original Heberian Dal gCais Ui Caisin Siol Aodha Chief of Magh Adhair, (The Plain of Adhar), who had been the original Fir Bolg Chief who held the territory in ancient times who was a son of Umor, a brother of Angus / Oenghus who had constructed the fort of Dun Aengus on the Arran Island). Magh Adhair initially passed into the hands of the Heberian Eoghanacht Ui Fidgeinti O Hehirs, who were later driven westward to the Barony of the Islands by the Mac Namaras who became the Lord Marshalls for the Heberian Dal gCais Ui Bloid Ui Turlough Ui mBriain O Brians. (The surrounding region of Magh Adhair (Moyry Park) is situated near Toonagh in Clooney Parish). The Mac Namaras were Princes / Tanaistes in their territory in Co. Clare in the north - west of Northern Munster who also later on became the Dalcassian Clann Caisin Chiefs who had their actual territory in the Barony of Tullagh. They were the second most important Heberian Dal gCais Family to the Ui Bloid Ui Turlough Ui mBriain O Briain Clann, who were descended from 92.Caisin's older brother, 92.Blood / Bladd the ancestor of the Ui Bloid Septs through 105.Brian Boru the 175th High King of Ireland. (92.Caisin, was the second eldest son of 91.Cas (Dal gCais), and their original Ui Caisin kinsmen were the O Gradys, the Mac Clancys, the O Deas, the Mac Inerneys, the O Meehans, the O Caisins, Mac Sheedys along with many other Dalcassian Ui Caisin Septs. The Mac Namara Ui Caisin Sept's territory originally took in Clooney, Doora, Inichicronan, Kilmurray na Gall, Kilraghtis, Quin, Templemaley and Tulla in the beginning of the 5th Century AD, and they became the Chiefs of the Clann Cuilean / Coilein in the 8th Century AD, which was to be expanded further until the beginning of the 14th Century.
In 1151 AD Cumara Beg Mac Namara was slain and he was followed by Niall Mac Namara, Cumeadha Mor Mac Namara, and Loghlen Mac Namara who died in 1313 AD. Mac Con na Mara was then followed by Sheeda / Sioda Mac Namara who was involved in the Wars of Thomond in 1278 AD. Cumeadha Mor Mac Namara who died in 1306 AD was interred in Ennis Abbey and Maccon Mac Namara was the Clan Culean King in 1312 AD during the Wars of Thomond. Sheeda Maccon was the Clann Culean King in 1318 AD when Thomas de Clare the Anglo - Norman Baron who was trying to take over Co. Clare was defeated and killed along with his son. With the previous reduction in the overall control of all of the Ui Bloid Septs, the Mac Namaras then drove many of them out of the region altogether, and subsequently gained control over their particular territories also in Co. Clare, including Aglish, Feakle, Iniscaltragh, Kilfinaghty, Killaloe, Killnoe, Killokennedy, Kilseely, Killuran, Moynoe, Tomgraney and Upper and Lower Tulla, which were then changed by the Mac Namaras into 2 separate territories of their own, East Cuilean and West Cuilean. These were previously the territories of their Dal gCais kinsmen Septs the Ui Ainmire, the Ui Bloid, the Ui Cearnaigh, the Ui Conghaile, the Ui Donghaile Tuaith Eachtao, the Ui Floinn, the Gleann Omra, the Ui Ronghaile, the Ui Toirdhealbhaigh (Ui Turlough) and the Tradraigh. In 1373 AD John Mac Namara died and in 1380 AD Cumara Gear Mac Namara died, while Siodha Cam Mac Namara who began the building of the Quinn Abbey was to die in 1414 AD and is interred therein. He was followed by Finnen Mac Namara, Loghlen Mac Namara, Fineen Mergach Mac Namara of Rossroe, and Sheeda Cam Mac Namara of Rossroe. and In 1402 AD Mac Miccon Mac Namara Fionn received a Papal Bull to install the Friars Minor in the Quinn Abbey. In 1416 AD Cumeadha Mac Namara died.
In 1542 AD Sheeda / Siodha Mac Namara along with the most important Ui mBriain leaders, the O Brians of the Dal gCais took up English titles and were appointed English knights by Henry V111 the Welsh Norman King of England. All of the ancient Irish Family territories held in common belonging to their Dal gCais people, under the Celtic Irish Brehon Law, were then granted to them personally by Henry V111 as subservient individuals to him as survivors, and overtime they soon found that they also had to become non - Catholics to hold on to it. He was to be followed by Fineen Mac Namara. This saw the beginning of the end for the Dalcassians as an individual Gaelic Milesian Irish Family Clann as the Dal gCais were then basically left leaderless. In 1571 AD Teague Mac Namara died, followed by John Mac Namara and Cumeadha Mac Namara in 1587 AD. They began to build many further castles to attempt to try and secure the vast region they then held, and by 1580 AD they had constructed 42 castles in Co. Clare, the most in any County in Ireland. 2 further individual Mac na Mara Septs evolved over time descended from 100.Cullin the direct male line ancestor of the Clann Cuilean who was their Chief in the 8th Century AD, becoming, the Chiefs of West Clann Cuilean at Bunratty, headed by Mac Namara Fionn - of Fair Complexion, and the Chiefs of East Clann Cuilean in Upper and Lower Tulla headed by Mac Namara Reagh / riabach / grey. The Mac Namaras were also the Chiefs of the Clann Cuilean - of the Holly Tree (and they were to rule over the east of Co. Clare in their own right for 600 years until the 17th Century AD.
In 1588 AD Teague / Tadhg Mac Namara who was then the West Clan Cuilean Chief was hung at Galway, who was the son of Donnell Reagh Mac Namara, the son of Cuvea Mac Namara, the son of Donogh Mac Namara, the son of Rory Mac Namara. On February 23rd 1592 AD Donnell Reagh Mac Namara the West Clann Cuilean Chief also died, who was a son of Cuvea Mac Namara, the son of Donogh Mac Namara, the son of Rory Mac Namara, the son of Maccon Cean Mor Mac Namara, John Mac Namara was the Lieutenant Colonel of Clare's Dragoons, and English appointed High Sheriff of Clare in 1689 and was also to be a Member of the County in the Catholic English King, James 11's Parliament in 1689 - 90. Fireball Mac Namara of Moyriesk in East Clare (1764 - 1836) was famous throughout Ireland for his involvement in many duels (56 in all), in which he was successful. John Mac Namara who died in 1780 AD left no issue and was to be the last member of the main Sept of the Mac Namaras. Denis Ruadh - of Red Complexion Mac Namara (1715 - 1810) the poet was interred at Newtown at Kil mac Thomas to the south - west of Wexford in Co. Wexford in the south - east of Southern Leinster. Daniel Mac Namara was from Cratloe Moyle, Dangan and Knopogue. Loghlen Laider - the Strong Mac Namara was the father of Hugh Mac Namara whose mother, his second wife, was the daughter of O Daly of Corcomroe. He also had 2 sons from his first wife who had been the daughter of O Dwyer of Kilnamanagh in Co. Tipperary.
