Osraighe / Ossory

    The kingdom of Ossory / Osraighe, was situated between the Munster Province and Southern Leinster in 83.Mogha's Half and was originally the territory occupied by the Celtic Gaelic Brigantes, the Celtic Cauci, the Celtic Usdiae and the Celtic Erainn of Munster, who were all to come under the overall leadership of the aristocratic warrior Sept of the Heremonian Ui Laoghaire Ui Connla Sept / Family branch descending from 87.Aengus Osrithe, culminating eventually into the main Sept of the Fitz Patricks / Mheic Giolla Phadraig. Ossory was originally divided into 7 Plains / Magha known as Magh Airgead Rois to the north of Kilkenny, Magh Airbh to the north - west to the Co. Laois border, Magh Chearbaill from the river Nore to the River Barrow, including Belach Gabhrain / Gowran, Magh Gabair Laighean to the north of the Johnswell Hills into Co. Laois, Magh Feimhin west of Callan to Slievenaman, Magh Lacha to the west of Kilkenny towards Callan, Magh Roighne, which was most of Shillelogher. The Heremonian Ui Laoghaire Ui Connla Sept began their individual aristocratic warrior ascent into the territory there in the 2nd Century AD. In the 5th Century AD the Heremonian Ui Cobhthaigh Ui Felim Deisi Sept who had been driven out of the Midlands / Midhe / Meath / Northern Leinster previously by *85.Cormac mac Airt the Gaelic Milesian Heremonian Dal Cuinn 115th King f Tara / Ireland, were set up in Co. Waterford in the south - east of the Munster Province adjacent to the south of Co. Kilkenny, and they combined with the Ithian Corca Loigde Sept who had their territory nearby in Co. Cork in Des Mhumhain / Desmond / Southern Munster and took over the territory in Southern Ossory, and the Ithian Corca Loigde Chiefs ruled the territory there instead for the next hundred years. In the 7th Century AD the Heremonian Ui Laoghaire Ui Connla Chiefs were then successful in regaining most of their territory there in Co. Kilkenny once again. In the 8th Century AD the Heremonian Ui Laoghaire Ui Luighaidh Cu Corb Ui Dunlainge Sept ruled Southern Leinster with Ossory on it's western border. In the 9th Century AD the Ui Dunlainge Sept then also ruled the kingdom of Ossory. In the 11th Century AD the Fitz Patricks / Mheic Giolla Phadraig Sept / Family branch once again came into their own right in the territory there. The territory between the river Nore and the River Barrow was known as Ui Creoghain Gabhran while the territory in the south - east was known as Comor na tri Uisge. (The High Region of the 3 Waters).

Gowran is the eastern portion of the territory there to the east of Oskelan and Ogenty and was under the control of the Heremonian Ui Laoghaire Ui Lughaidh Cu Corb Ui Drona / Idrone Sept, such as the O Ryans / Ui Riain and the Ui Bairrche, while the territory in Callan was the territory of the O Gloherny / O Gloiran / O Gloerne and the O Callan / O Coill Septs.

Osraighe Ui Berchon  / Bearrchon. Main Family: O Kelly / O Kealy / O Ceely / O Queally  / Ui Callaidhe / Ui Caollaidhe whose territory was originally at Ibercon being the north of Ida (O Donovan) in Iverk in the south - east of Ossory / Co. Kilkenny in the south - west of Southern Leinster before the Anglo - Norman Invasion occurred. They were also Chiefs of Crioch Ui Muighe. Ancestors: Iachtchair descended from 87.Aengus Osrithe.

The Magh Mail / Ogenty territory was to the west of the River Barrow in Gowran and they were also in the north of Ossory and nearby there in the south of Co. Laois at Magh Lacha in the mid - west of Southern Leinster after the Anglo - Norman Invasion occurred where they evolved into 3 separate Septs of Le, Magh Druchtain and Galen. In the middle of the 12th Century AD the O Kelly / Ui Caellaighe Sept had their territory in the north of Galmoy, while the O Brophy / Ui Broi Sept had their territory in Central Galmoy, and the O Coveney / O Gaffney / O Keveney / Ui Caibhdheanaigh Sept of Magh Airbh and Clar Coill had their territory in the south of Galmoy at Crannagh during the Anglo - Norman Invasion.

  Na Clanna Mac Breen / Mheic Braoin were the Chiefs of Magh Seadna in the Cantred of Knocktopher.

  The Ui Carthin had their territory in the north - west of Ossory / Co. Kilkenny. 

 O Carroll / O Carrowill / Ui Cearbhaill had their territory in Kilkenny and Oskelan in the central east of Ossory.

The Dal Chormaic / Ui Cruinn / Ui Crinn / Ui Grine also had their territory originally at Ingrin / Ida in the south - east of Iverk in Ossory / Co. Kilkenny in the south - west of Southern Leinster. Ancestors: 87.Cormac Lusc, 86.Cu Corb.

 The O Deas / Ui Dheaghaidh had their territory at Ida in the Cantred of Iverk. 

Osraighe / Ui Duach Sept: Main Family: O Brennan / O Brannan / O Brannon / Ui Braonain who were the Chiefs during the 10th and 11th Century when surnames were first introduced in Ireland. Other Septs: Clann Amhlaibh / Awley of the Ui Duach, Clann mheic Conaill, Clann mheic Kelowe / Clann mheic Gillenanaomh and Clann Muirchertaig whose territory in the 10th Century AD took in much of the north and north - east  at Airgetros in Maigib Raighne, Fassadinn, Idough / Odogh in Co. Kilkenny in the south - west of Southern Leinster. In 1150 AD in the north of Aghaboe were the O Delanys / O Delanes / O Delanys / O Dulanes / O Dulaneys / O Delanys / O Dulanys / Ui Dubhshlaine of Coil Uachtarach (Upper Woods) the Chiefs of Tuath an Toraidh and the O Hourihans / Ui hUrachain from the Ui Fairchellain Sept in Co. Laois in the mid - north - west of Southern Leinster, while in the south were the O Brodys / O Broes / Ui Bruaideodha Sept and the O Phelans / Ui Faelain Sept. 

Ossory / Ui nEirc Sept / Ui Mheic Eirce (Descended from Erc.) Main Family: O Broder / O Broderick / O Brothers / Ui Bruadair.Other Septs:  Na Clanna (Mac Breen / Mac Bruen / Mac Bruyn / Mac Bryan / Mheic Braoin. Their territory was in Iverk during the Anglo - Norman Invasion. Ancestors: 100.Toole / Tuathal, 99.Muirithe, 98.Maol Tuile, 97.Cuan, 96.Conall, 95.Grilline,94.maic Eirc / Ui mheic Eirce, 93.Ailill Cennfada / Cendfota, 92.Erc / Ercc, 91.Cairbre / Coirpre (Ui Choirpri Aebda), 90.Brion, 89.Fiacha / Fiachu Fidhgheinte / Fidgennid / Ui Fidhgheinte / Ui Fidgeinti, 88.Maine Munchain, 87.Ailill / Oilioll Fland Bec, 86.Fiachu Mullethan the 1st King of Southern Munster,  85.Eoghan Mor (Eoghanachta), 84.Ailill / Oilioll Oluimm the 1st King of Munster.

Ely O Carroll also had territory in the north - west of Ossory / Co. Kilkenny.

Osraighe / Ui Fairchellain. Main Family: O Horahan / Ui hUrachain who had their territory at Offerlane in Co. Laois in the mid - north - west of Southern Leinster.

O Phelan / Ui Faoileain had their territory in the Cantred of Erley (The western part of Kells during the Anglo - Norman Invasion).

Osraighe / Mag Mail / Ui Geintich Main Family: O Dunphy / O Donochowe / O Dunaghy / O Donoghue / O Donohoe / O Donagh / Ui Donnachadha. They had their territory at Ogenty / Ui Geintigh and Tir Ua nGentigh in Gowran in Ossory / Co. Kilkenny in the south - west of Southern Leinster, which was to be granted by the English Invaders to the Anglo - Norman Baron, Theobold Fitz Walter  / le Buitleir / Butler in the late 12th Century AD.

Siol Ui Luachra. They had their territory in Shillelogher with the O Clery and O Shea Septs there in the 12th Century AD who had their territory originally in the Munster Province.

Osraighe / Ui Scellain. Main Family: O Scallen / O Skallen / O Skellan / O Skelton / Ui Sceallain who had their territory at Sliab Mairge the mountain region from Co. Carlow into Ossory / Co. Kilkenny and Co. Laois in the Castlewarren, Johnswell and Kilmogar Hills in Gowran in Southern Leinster. Ancestor: 93.Scellan who was sixth in descent from 87.Aengus Osrithe.
