*Lugol's (Iodine) Solution / IKI / Iodine / Strong Solution (Systemic), Aqueous Iodine Soltion BP: 5% Iodine / I,2 10% Potassium Iodide / KI in distilled Water having an Iodine content of 130mg/mL included to render the Iodine Water - Soluble. Lugol's was widely used for a number of Conditions with some precautions. Many of the Organs in the Body require Iodine especially Breast Tissue as a link has been confirmed between Fibrocystic Breast Disease and Iodine Deficiency in the diet. Studies have confirmed also that there has been an increase in Breast Cancer since Iodine was eliminated from Bread and replaced with Bromine, which is Toxic to the Thyroid Gland as well. Created in 1829 by a French physician it was used as an Anti - Septic & Disinfectant, as a Starch indicator, to replenish an Iodine Deficiency, to protect the Thyroid Gland from Radioactivity, and to disinfect drinking Water. Was also used to treat Gout and for Hyperthyroidism in Adults by painting the Souls of the Feet before retiring to allow the Body to take in what it required. If it was absorbed then it meant the Body needed more and it was applied then on a nightly basis until the Body rebuilt its stores and until none was eventually absorbed. It was also prescribed Internally with 1 - 2 drops in a glass of drinking water 1 - 3 times a day but it has a metallic taste and must not be overdone. It is also used to indicate Starches in Organic compounds and reacts by turning dark - blue or black by staining the Starches due to the interaction with the coil structure of the Polysaccharide. It will not detect simple Sugars such as Glucose & Fructose. In the Disease of the Organs - Amyloidosis (which see under Conditions) the deposits can be so abundant that the affected Organs - the Kidneys, Liver, Heart etc will also stain positive for Starch. Lugol's Solution (Iodine) is prescribed for Thyroid Storm and pre - operatively. Lugol’s can also be used as a Cell stain making the Cell Nuclei more visible to observe how a Cell Membrane uses Osmosis & Diffusion. Also used to preserve Phytoplankton samples by dissolving 20g of Potassium Iodide in 200ml of distilled Water and mix thoroughly and add 10ml of sublimed Iodine. Do not supersaturate with Iodine as this can result in Crystal formation, which interferes with Cell counting.
