17 BC
At
8
years of age Setanta / Cu Chulann was playing at hurling when
his uncle,
65.Conor mac Nessa
the
Irian King of Ulster
rode by who was going to see
Culann the Chief Smith
(gabhan)
of
Ulster Province, and he told Setanta to follow him
there after
he was finished playing his game, and later on when
65.Conor mac Nessa
arrived at the smith's residence
Culann the Chief smith went inside and on the way
there set loose his
fierce hound, and when
Setanta eventually arrived the dog
attacked him head on, so in response he threw his sling shot ball into
its mouth and grabbed it by the hind legs and dashed it against a nearby rock
until it was dead. The Chief smith was terribly upset over the loss of this
particular dog so Setanta
promised him another dog that he would train personally, and he would also
guard his
house until he did in the meantime. This action was to earn him the nickname of Cu Chulann (The
Hound of Cullan the Smith.)
Setanta and his mother,
Deichtire, were against the name change, but
Cathbad
the Druid prophesied that
this would be his name from then on, which would be known to everyone in
Ireland,
and later on Cu
Chulann was to hear
Cathbad say that if any
young man took up arms on a certain day his name would be greater then anyone
else in
Ireland,
but his life would be short, and in response to this he went to
65.Conor mac Nessa
demanding arms and a charioteer, saying that
Cathbad had told him to, and he
then went out on an expedition and returned with the heads of
3 Champions who had
previously killed many of the
Ulster
warriors.
Cu Chulann was
to go with his maternal uncle,
65.Conor mac Nessa the
Irian King
of Ulster to the Isle of Man
where they defeated the
Manx warriors there.
Curoi mac Daire,
the son of
Daire, the King of
West Iarthar / West Munster, who had his fortress 2000' up on the
Sliab Mis mountain at

known as "The
Fort of the Champion of the Battlefield" at Camp in Co.
Kerry in the south - west of the Munster Province
in Corco Duibhne went with them and as a reward
for his support
65.Conor mac Nessa
gave
Curoi, Blanaid the daughter of the
Celtic King of Man, as a reward to be his wife, but Cu Chulann had previously made personal plans of
his own with her and she had returned his advances, and Cu Chulann was then desperate to
get her back. On returning
to
Laeg was to act as the main charioteer for Cu Chulann, and his chariot was to be pulled by his two horses, Dubh Sanglainn and Liath Macha / The Grey of Macha.
Earlier on Chu Chulann was to have his mind set on Emer the daughter of Forgall - the Wily, as she was not only beautiful, but had a lovely voice and sweet speech and was also good at needlework, and full of wisdom and chastity, but when he approached her she only laughed at him as he was still only a boy, but despite this she promised him that she would marry him if he could take her away from her kindred including her father, Forgall - the Wily who learning of this went to 65.Conor mac Nessa at Emain Macha and told him that if Cu Chulann went to Scathach - the Amazon, who lived on an island in the east of Alba (Isle of Skye ?), and learnt all of her warrior craft, no one would stand against him, as he had personally considered that Chu Chulann would soon be killed there. Although Laegaire - the Battle Winner and 68.Conall Cernach - the Victorious went with him, they were to turn back along the way and leave him to his own devices as he continued on his jouney alone, and when he arrived at his destination Scathach was with her 2 sons and he pointed his sword at her and said that he would kill her if she did not teach him her skills, and she agreed to help him, and in return Cu Chulann later was also to assist her against Aoife a rival Queen there and made her make peace with Scathach. When he was to return to Ireland later on he took a scythed chariot to Forgall - the Wily's palace and climbed over the walls and killed anyone who got in his way, including Forgall - the Wily himself and placed Emer in his chariot and returned to Emain Macha where they were married. In the meantime Aoife - the Amazon Queen who Cu Chulann had defeated previously had given birth to his son, and if she did Cu Cullann had asked her to call him Connalach / Connla and send him back over to Ireland when he came of age, and later being informed that Cu Chullan had since married Emer, she taught her son also the craft of using arms hoping he would seek revenge on Cu Chulann, and to this end she advised Connalach to go over to Ireland, instructing him to never turn back, never refuse a challenge, and never tell anyone his real name. When he arrived at Dundalk / Dun Dealgan near Cu Chulann's residence 68.Conall Cearnach at first asked him his name and where he came from, and he refused to answer him, which led on to a duel with 68.Conall Cernach who he not only defeated but humiliated, and Cu Chulann then came forward and asked him the same and he also refused to tell him and this also led to a further conflict between the two of them also, and just as he started to realise that Cu Chualann was actually his father he threw his spear aside, but it was too late as Cu Chulann had released his notorious spear, the Gae Bolg, and it struck Connla wounding him mortally, who in his dying breath was still able to inform him who he really was, and Cu Chulann then went into an endless frenzy of grief until the men of Ulster had Cathbad the Druid put a spell on him until he became tired and weary.
Before this also 65.Conor mac Nessa the Irian King of Ulster was holding a feast in the house of Felim / Feidhlimidh who was one of his bards, whose wife gave birth to a daughter, and Cathbad the Druid prophesied that she would grow up to be the most beautiful woman ever seen in the Ulster Province, and that because of her great beauty she would bring death to many and sorrow to the Irian kingdom in the Ulster Province and the Knights of the Red Branch of Ulster demanded that she be immediately disposed of, but 65.Conor mac Nessa instead gave her to a woman named Levarcham, for her to rear in a secret place in the mountains, until she was to be old enough to become his own wife. Cathbad the Druid had named her Deidre, and she was to be eventually reared among the creatures of the forest until she was of age, and during this time Levarcham always made her well aware of her future fate of having to be forced to marry the aged 65.Conor mac Nessa. Levarcham, as her teacher, was by this time well and truly committed to her interests, instead of those of 65.Conor mac Nessa. and she also informed Deidre of the existence of Naoise / Naisu, who was one of the 3 sons of Usnach of Ulster, who were all well known aristocratic warrior heroes of Ulster, and she arranged a personal meeting for her with Naoise, where Deidre was to plead with him to take her away from the clutches of the aged 65.Conor mac Nessa. Because of her great beauty and innocence, he agreed to assist her, along with his 2 brothers Ardan and Ainle, and to escape from the wrath of 65.Conor mac Nessa they all left Ulster and went across the Irish Sea to Alba / Scottish Highlands. On discovering what had occurred 65.Conor mac Nessa was beside himself with rage, but he decided all he could do was to bide his time, and later on he announced that the 3 sons of Usnach should be encouraged to return to Ulster to assist to defend it against the aristocratic warrior Gaelic Septs from the other 4 Provinces. (He also let it be known that he would genuinely welcome them back if they should return to Ulster). Eventually everyone agreed that this would be for the best, and 65.Conor mac Nessa called upon 68.Conall Cearnach - of the Victories the leader of the Irian Red Branch Warriors of Ulster and asked him, "What would you do personally if I sent you to encourage the 3 sons of Usnach to return to Ulster and they were then somehow feloniously slain," who then replied, "That there would be no man in Ulster safe from my vengeance if that was to occur." He then called on Cu Chulann and asked him the same question, who also replied, that, "If that happened, no bribe or blood - fine would deter me from even taking your own head." He then called on 64.Fergus mac Roigh, who stated, that, " If that occurred he too would revenge the foul deed, except on 65.Conor mac Nessa himself."
This was just what he wanted to hear, so he sent 64.Fergus mac Roigh off to Alba to persuade them all to come back to Ulster from their exile, under 65.Conor's personal guarantee of protection, and if they did return they were then to be sent onto to Emain Macha as soon as they were to land in Ulster Province. 64.Fergus mac Roigh was accompanied by his 2 sons 65.Illan Fionn - of Fair Complexion and 65.Buinne - the Ruthless Red and on crossing over to Alba they landed at Loch Etive where 64.Fergus mac Roigh persuaded the 3 sons of Usnach to return to Emain Macha immediately in Ulster, although Deidre herself was firmly against it. They landed back in Ireland at the fort / dun of Borrach at Fair Head / Ballycastle where those in charge there had been instructed by 65.Conor mac Nessa to conduct a feast / feis there to honour 64.Fergus mac Roigh to try and hold him back personally from the group, as he also knew that this would go against one of 64.Fergus mac Roigh's own personal geis / geasa / prohibitions. 64.Fergus mac Roigh was upset about this new turn of events so he asked Naoise what he thought he should do as to attending the feis, as if he refused, it would also go against the protocol of the Red Branch Warriors code regarding hospitality. Naoise told him that although he realised he was under an obligation, if he did this he would be forsaking him and his 2 brothers and Deidre to their fate and to the definite wily agenda of 65.Conor mac Nessa. Despite this 64.Fergus mac Roigh, depending on the previous assurances of 65.Conor mac Nessa, eventually relented and decided to stay behind, sending the 3 sons of Usnach and Deidre on to Emain Macha under the safeguard of his own 2 sons, 65.Buinne - the Reckless Red and 65.Aline Fionn - of Fair Complexion. The 3 sons of Usnach were by now naturally very wary of what lay ahead for them all, while Deidre was absolutely terrified, as she had already had a vision of the 3 sons of Usnach and Illann Fionn, one of the sons of 64.Fergus mac Roigh, without their heads, and she begged them to wait for Fergus mac Roigh, but they decided to continue on with their journey. On arriving at Emain Macha they were placed in the house of the Red Branch Warriors and 65.Conor mac Nessa did not come to meet with them personally, but sent Deidre's old teacher, Levarcham, to see if Deidre was still as beautiful as ever, who then went to see the 3 sons of Usnach and Deidre and after warning them that 65.Conor mac Nessa was up to no good, she returned and informed 65.Conor mac Nessa that Deidre's previous hard life in Alba had taken its toll ruining her good looks, hoping this would dissuade him from acting against them, which it did for a while. Later on when 65/Conor mac Nessa was intoxicated he decided to send one of his trusted followers to look upon Deidre, who on returning advised him that she was still truly beautiful, and in a raging frustrating fit of anger 65.Conor mac Nessa then sent some of his Ulster warriors under Eoghan to set fire to the Red Branch warriors house in which they were staying and to slay all those within it, except for Deidre.
Buinne - the Ruthless Red, one of the sons of 64.Fergus mac Roigh, soon put out the fire and drove them off, so 65.Conor mac Nessa decided to offer him a bribe of a portion of land for his own personal use to desert the 3 sons of Usnach, and he accepted his offer, but 65.Illan Fionn - of Fair Complexion, the other son of 64.Fergus mac Roigh was made of better stuff and instead charged out against the attackers and drove them off, so 65.Conor mac Nessa was not game to offer him a bribe and sent his own son, 66.Fiacha with his shield known as - the Moaner, which rang out loud when it was under attack, to personally take on 65.Illan Fionn. 66.Fiacha was no match for the abilities of 65.Illan Fionn and was soon cowed beneath the shield, and as 65.Illan Fionn struck it with his sword it rang out for all to hear, including 68.Conall Cearnach - of the Victories the leader of the Red Branch warriors who rushed unknowingly to assist 66.Fiacha, not realising what was really going on, and he mortally injured 65.Illan Fionn with his spear - the Blue Green, who while he was dying was able to explain what was really occurring and 68.Conall Cearnach then attacked 66.Fiacha, the son of 65.Conor mac Nessa, and killed him also. The 3 sons of Usnach were then able to continue to defend their own position until the dawn, when they decided to try and make a run for it with Deidre firmly placed in their centre, and in further desperation 65.Conor mac Nessa then had Cathbad the Druid intervene who he promised that if he did he would spare their lives, so Cathbad put them under a spell and they settled down and were seized and brought before 65.Conor mac Nessa who once again went against his promise and condemned them to death. None of the Red Branch warriors would carry out his sickening command, so he had Maine a Norse Prince who was there from Norway come forward, who offered to behead the 3 sons of Usnach as Naoise had previously killed his father and brothers in battle so Naoise handed over his own sword - the Retaliator, (previously given to him by Manannan, the son of Ler), to carry out the foul deed against himself and his brothers. Deidre with her hands tied behind her back was brought to 65.Conor mac Nessa who asked her, "Who do you hate the most," and she replied "You and Eoghan," so 65.Conor mac Nessa then decided to hand her over to Eoghan for a year, but she was not to survive this ordeal, as while Eoghan was dragging her towards his chariot she dashed her head on a nearby rock and died. (It was recorded later that a pine tree was to grow out of Naoise and Deidre's graves and entwine.) 65.Conor mac Nessa was now in total disgrace with his followers in Ulster and 64.Fergus mac Roigh on returning to Emain Macha and finding out what had occurred gathered together his own followers and slew another of 65.Conor mac Nessa's sons, and together with his own Ulster warriors went into exile into Sreng's Fifth / Connacht Province, to Ailill and 76.Maeve / Medb the Heremonian King and Queen there. The whole matter had so upset Cathbad the Druid that he put a curse on 65.Conor mac Nessa and his Irian kingdom in Ulster, so that none of 65.Conor mac Nessa's descendants might ever reign in Ulster again, and all of this was to come to pass with the eventual death of Cu Chulann and Emain Macha was to become only a grassy hill.
