1971 AD - 3 - August
August 1st: In the 6 Counties artificially partitioned from the 9 in the Ulster Province, the British Conservative Government's Imperial Military forces began carrying out raids on the homes in these 6 Counties again that were still under their control.
August 5th:
In the 6
Counties artificially partitioned from the 9 in the
Ulster Province,
Brian Faulkner
the "Official" Unionist Prime Minister
in the Stormont Government and the
British Imperial Government's Military General
Tuzo
flew over to England
to obtain, "Internment
without Trial," under
Article No.12 of the Special
Powers Act from the British Conservative Government for anyone in these
6 Counties
in Ulster who they "suspected."
He then banned all
marches in these
6 Counties
in Ulster
for one year, but the
N.I.C.R.A. / Civil Rights Association
and the
P.I.R.A. / Provisional IRA
endeavouring to resist any further repression continued to organize them.
August 7th:
In the 6 Counties
artificially partitioned from the 9 in the
Ulster Province,
a British
Imperial Military soldier killed
Harry Thornton,
a
34 year old
welder
who was also a
Catholic father of
6
children while he was
driving along the Springfield Road
after his van had backfired,
and the British Imperial Military were eventually to admit to the killing, but not
until some months later.
Francis Cunningham
a
13 year old youth
was also killed accidently during the protests, and was to be the last and
29th victim of the continuing "Troubles" to
die this year in these 6 Counties in
Ulster. The immediate result was that
Belfast in
Co. Antrim went up in flames, and by
the end of the weekend
2 more British Imperial Military
soldiers were shot and wounded
and there were now more
British Imperial Military
soldiers being
sent over to these 6 Counties in
Ulster by the British Conservative Government in
England.
August 9th:
In the 6
Counties artificially partitioned from the 9 in the
Ulster Province,
Brian Faulkner
the "Official"
Unionist Prime Minister of Stormont, introduced,
"Internment without
Trial" into these
6 Counties
in Ulster
still under their control,
and at 4.15 a.m.
in the morning the
British Government Imperial Military
forces began raiding the
Catholic Irish
areas
again with 3
soldiers in each squad concentrating on each
individual
Irishman
they had on their
lists, and the women and children there were out
banging their dust bin lids on the pavement as a warning of these on going raids.
Within
24
hours
342 Catholic
Irishmen were "Interned without Trial," and
the British Military were to be forced to release one third of these
within 48
hours as they found
that all of the people they were really after were missing,
and all they had done was to increase the
Catholic Irish
resentment even further creating more
recruits for the
I.R.A.
Meanwhile, Charles Haughey
in the
Irish Republic spoke out against the continuing
artificial partition of
Ireland,
as it was in reality by
now a total failure, and again wanted the
United Nations
to bring in a Peace Keeping
Force on the basis that the
British Conservative Government had not continued
to bring in any further positive reforms to
end all of the injustices, in the
6 Counties
artificially partitioned from the
9
in the in the Ulster Province, carried out
against the
Catholic Irish population there, and he also demanded the removal of all
the
British
Imperial; Military Army forces there.
August 10th:
In the 6 Counties
artificially partitioned from the 9 in the
Ulster Province,
500 Irishmen
"suspected" of being
Irish Nationalists were taken by the
British
Imperial Military forces and
"interned" in the camps at
Girdwood Park army camp in
Belfast in
Co. Antrim were
185
were placed, with
117 of these eventually being charged there
with some offence or other, to try and legitimise their wholesale action. The
others were taken to
Magilligan Camp, which was
20
miles north of Derry
in Co. Derry, and
Ballykinler Camp in
Co.
Down, were they were held for
2 days in "detention" until the
British Military of the "Official" Unionist Government could come
up with some trumped up charges against them.
10
more people were to be
killed on this day, including
7
men, 1 woman and
2
more British
Imperial Military soldiers.
Sarah Worthington, the deceased woman among
them was a non - Catholic
who had been actually killed by a British
Imperial Military soldier, but at this time they continued
to blame the
I.R.A, until
3
months later, when they had to admit at the inquest that they knew all along that it was one of
their own British
Imperial Military
soldiers. One of those also killed in the massive round up, and the
first to be killed, was
Patrick Mac Adorey a
25 year old man from the
Ardoyne district who was shot and killed in
Jamaica Street.
An additional
346 people were rounded up
in these 6 Counties in Ulster
and
imprisoned by out of date RUC police
lists, and all of these were
Irish Catholics,
which further increased the resentment and
the turmoil and also the support for the
I.R.A.
to assist
them now, as they had no one else to protect them. A result of all of this
particular mayhem was that further rioting now occurred and
it spread and
only worsened over the next 2 days and on the
following
Tuesday 240
more homes were burnt in
Belfast in Co. Antrim alone, and by
Wednesday
night 23
more people were
dead and
7,000 Irish Catholics
fled across the
artificial border as further blatant ethnic and
religious cleansing occurred in these 6 Counties in
Ulster, and to provide for this the
Irish Republic Government
set up
refugee camps there in the
Irish Republic.
12
of the Irish Catholic men who were taken into custody
in these 6 Counties artificially partitioned from
the 9 in the in the Ulster
Province still under the control of the British Imperial Government and
the Ascendancy "Official" Unionist Government at Stormont were removed for
special treatment
illegally for
6
days
of hell to Ballykinler
Camp in
Co. Down by the
British Imperial Military forces. They were interrogated using appalling inhuman
measures to obtain information, as they were handed over to the
British Secret
Service and the
British
Ministry of Defence / M.i5 under
David Eastwood the
British Imperial Government's Director of Intelligence
in these
6
Counties in Ulster. He permanently kept bags over their heads the whole time, and
made them stand against a wall with their legs spread apart for up to
2
days
and none were allowed to sleep at all for the first few days. Included among them
were
Kevin Hannaway
and
Francis Mac Guigan,
and the tortuous methods used
against them were so bad that the
British Conservative Government were forced later on
to allow a
Tribunal of Inquiry and a
Committee of Privy Councillors
to
be set up in which
Lord Gardiner declared,
"It was illegal and not morally
justified."
In the 6
Counties artificially partitioned from the 9 in the
Ulster Province, the Rev.
Ian Paisley the hard - line
Unionist
ethnic and religious fanatic, who
had previously founded his own
Free Presbyterian Church, now founded the
Democratic Unionist Party. The
Unionist
Defence Association / Unionist Volunteers
was also formed by the Unionists
themselves who were to eventually resort to slitting the
throats of the Catholic Irish
population. They had been originally founded to take on the
Catholic youth street gangs in the
Shankhill Road
area and keep
these 6
Counties in Ulster within the
United
Kingdom of Great Britain, and maintain their independence under the
Ascendancy, but once again power corrupts and total power
totally corrupts.
In the 6 Counties artificially partitioned from the 9 in the Ulster Province, the Provisional I.R.A. / Provos were now in a position to go on the offensive against an enemy that now presented itself as British Imperial Military oppression, that was once again condoned by the British Conservative Government, who from their perspective were still in occupation of the 6 Irish Counties in Ulster.
August 12th:
Jack Lynch
the Prime Minister of the
Republic of Ireland wanted
the Stormont Government
abolished in the 6 Counties
In the 6
Counties artificially partitioned from the 9 in the
Ulster Province,
and put forward a Power - Sharing
proposition for both the artificially partitioned
parts of Ireland
to bring
about peace and unification. Meanwhile, in
the 6 Counties artificially partitioned from the
9 in the
Ulster Province
itself,
Gerry Fitt
the leader of
the political S.D.L. Party / Social
Democratic Labour Party called for
Civil disobedience, for no rents to be paid on
Catholic housing estates,
no electricity or gas
bills,
except for one in each street to keep it connected, and a
complete
boycott of all Local Government positions there.
The Unionists
in the
6 Counties artificially partitioned from the
9 in the
Ulster Province,
were now actively circulating their intention to form a
Military force of their own, which eventually was to surface as
the Para
- Military Defence Association,
and this was
also brought on by the "Internment
without Trial," and to also defend the Unionist areas and take on
the I.R.A.
August 21st:
The
I.R.A.
in
Co. Monaghan
in Southern Ulster in the
Irish Republic put a forward a
commonsense proposal that
Ireland
should be re - united made up of
4 Regional
Parliaments with the
Ulster Province to be known as
Dail Uladh, and
the 6 Counties artificially
partitioned from the 9 in the
Ulster Province,
to be re - united with its
other
3 Counties.
John Hume
and
Ivar Cooper
from the political S.D.L. P / Social Democratic Labour Party
in
the 6 Counties artificially partitioned from the
9 in the
Ulster Province, were
now also arrested for participating at a
Civil Rights
rally in Derry
in Co. Derry, and there was a bombing campaign also
being carried out in Belfast
in Co. Antrim. This period
was to see the culmination of the worst violence
that had ever occurred in the
6 Counties
artificially partitioned from the
9 in the Ulster Province, up to this date, with
15
more people being killed and
174 more
to be killed before the end of this
year, as the Catholic
Irish refugees
streamed across the artificial border into the
Irish Republic
were
4,500 were to be settled in the camps set up
there by the
Republic of Ireland
Government.
August 25th:
Gerry Fitt the leader of the political S..D.L.
Party / Social Democratic Labour Party went to New York
were he requested the
United Nations
to send observers to the
6 Counties artificially
partitioned from the 9 in the
Ulster Province,
to witness for themselves the continuing
brutality occurring there under the auspices of the British
Conservative Government and the "Official" Unionist Stormont Government.
August 26th:
Harold Wilson
the British Labour leader who was now in the Opposition
at Westminster in England, realizing there was political capital to be gained
attacked Edward Heath the British Prime Minister and his Conservative Government's,
"Internment without
Trial" in the
6 Counties
artificially partitioned from the 9 in the
Ulster Province,
on the basis that it was only recruiting many more
I.R.A. leaders for the future.
