Cultivation: A deciduous golden coloured slow - growing plant in Autumn that requires a cool climate and has fan shaped notched Leaves resembling the Maidenhair Fern, The subsequent plum - like Fruit has an unpleasant smell and produces a seed resembling an Almond, which can be baked, boiled or roasted before being cracked open. Harvest the Leaves and dry as they change colour in Autumn. Grown in a well - drained, fertile soil from the seed taken from the ripe fruit, that falls from the trees, and requires a male and female tree planted together. Less stimulating then Korean Ginseng, but increases Stamina and performance, improves clarity of Mind and Concentration. Assists during periods of Stress, such as exams etc. Cultivation: A deciduous shrub with thick Roots, divided Leaves and umbels of black berries. Use dried Roots. Dose: 1gr a day for short periods.
GLOBE ARTICHOKE / Cynara scolymus. Best variety: Grande Beurre. Cultivation: A unique and delicious tall Perennial Vegetable, eaten as a delicacy, as it has a subtle, sweet and nutty flavour, and is one of the oldest foods known to Humans.
Cultivation: Does best in medium to sandy loam, but will grow in any well - drained soil, and is easy to raise from Seed, and will develop rapidly if sown directly into an open sunny spot. Plant 1 metre apart, as overcrowding reduces the flower stems, with the Buds appearing in early Spring, and will bear before the end of Summer right up to November. 5 x Plants should be enough, and if buying purchase during Autumn and Winter, and they can be left in the same bed for 3 years, and are especially good for the back of a flower beds. The suckers / young shoots, should be detached with a piece of the old root at the base of the plant. Plant firmly and water well, and they can take up to 10 days to get going. After flowering finishes, keep the plants watered and mulched through Summer, and in Autumn cut back to 30cm high, and apply a dressing of mixed fertilizer and animal manure or mulch, to maintain the soil structure. Prune back to the 5 strongest shoots in Winter for the Buds required for next Spring. The Plant will then bear well for the next 3 - 4 years, and should then be divided and replanted or replace with vigorous new seedlings every 2 - 3 years. Consumption: The large fleshy - scaled Flower Bud is eaten, but do not allow the Buds to open or they will not be edible, and harvest the Buds when 5 - 10cm in diameter while still tight and tender. Rinse well in cold water, and cook in lightly salted water with a squeeze of Lemon Juice for 20 minutes, and test the base with a skewer to determine the tenderness. Trim the base, so that they stand upright and remove any tatty leaves prior to cooking. Drain the cooked Artichokes upside down in a colander, and open out the top leaves, and remove the spikey - little yellow leaves at the centre and the hairy choke. Underneath is the delicious heart. Serve on large plates to take the discarded leaves, which are pulled off, starting at the outside. Dip the base of each leaf into sauce, and draw the leaf end through the Teeth, to scrape off the edible portion then discard. Cut the Artichoke base into pieces, and dip into melted Butter, or serve hot with Hollandaise Sauce or cold with Vinaigrette Sauce.
