O Neill of Ulster
O Neill or O Neil or O Neile or O Neyle or O Niall or Neilson or Nelson or Nilson - Irish / Ua Niaill / Niall (passionate or champion) - of Ulster. Kings of Ulster and Princes / Tanaistes of Tir Eogain / Tyrone (The Land of 91.Eogain) and English appointed Earls in Ulster. Chiefs and appointed English Viscounts in the territories of the kingdoms of Dal Riada in Co. Antrim and Ulaidh in Co. Armagh and Co. Down in the east of the Ulster Province.
A Heremonian Dal Cuinn northern Ui Niaill Cenel nEogain Sept / Family branch, who had their original territory in Co. Derry in the north - east of Ulster and in the east of the adjacent Co. Donegal and then later also in Co. Tyrone. They were initially the Kings of Aileach in Northern Ulster descended from 91Eogan the 1st King of Tir Eogain the direct male line ancestor of the Cenel nEogain Sept there. They were kinsmen to the O Hagans, O Kanes, O Loughlins etc and were closely related to the Cenel Conaill O Donnells and O Dohertys descended from 91.Eogan’s brother, 91.Conall Gulban the 1st King of Tir Conaill / Tyrconnell mainly Co. Donegal. They are descended more directly from *100.Niall Glun Dubh - of the Black Knee the 29th / 30th King of Aileach and 170th King of Ireland and towards Moville is St. Columba’s Stone 6’ square, which was the Inauguration Stone of Tir Eogan / Tyrone. The other sub - Sept of the O Neills - of Co. Tyrone are directly descended from the O Nialls - of the Fews whose original territory was in Co. Armagh in the east of the Ulster Province, and they are descended through 122.Aodh O Niall, the second son of 121.Eogan O Niall, who was inaugurated as their Chief in 1432 AD. From 1548 - 1552 AD Murtough / Muirchertach O Niall was their Chief. The O Neills later on when they become the Kings of Ulster, took up the Battle Cry / Lamh Dearg Abu / The Red Hand Forever.
In the 13th Century AD the Dal Cuinn northern Ui Niaill Cenel Eogain under 117.Aodh Buidhe - of the Yellow Hair O Niall took over further large areas in the kingdom of Ulaidh in Co. Antrim and Co. Down, in the north - east of Ulster, with English Gall support, and that particular sub - Sept then became known as the O Neills of Clann Aodha Buidhe l Clannaboy whose particular main seat was then at Eden Duff Carrig in the north - west of the town of Antrim in Co. Antrim. Another O Niall sub Sept - of Shane's Castle was to form later on from a junior branch of Clannaboy who went over to the English and became non - Catholic.
In 1559 AD 125.Shane - the Proud O Niall / The O Niall, who refused to speak English was a champion of Ireland against Elizabeth 1st's never - ending ethnic and religious oppression and spurned all English titles, and had his Castle near Loch Neagh south west of Randalstown / Mainwater / Eden Duff Carrig in Co. Antrim, which was then held by the O Nialls of Clannaboy. He was the eldest legitimate son of 124.Conn Bacach O Niall / The O Niall, who had eventually given in and submitted to Henry V111 and took up the English title of the 1st Earl of Tyrone who had his fortress south of the River Laggan at Newtownbreda in Co. Down on the Co. Antrim border. 125.Shane O Niall / The O Niall was eventually killed and beheaded In 1567 AD and Elizabeth 1st put an Attainder on his head and confiscated all of his territories, and a reward was paid for his head, and his cousin, 125.Turlough Luineach O Niall was then put in with the support of the English to be their proxy as The O Niall instead, but he too soon came under the suspicion of the English Deputy when he married Agnes Campbell the daughter of the Earl of Argyll (The Land of the Gael) in the Scottish Highlands.
In 1568 AD 126.Aodh Dubh / Black Hugh O Niall, who was born at Dungannon in the Ulster Province, was to become the English appointed third Baron of Dungannon and later still the English appointed 2nd Earl of Tyrone. He along with many other minors from the main Irish Families had been taken as children and reared by Elizabeth 1st as non - Catholics in England for an English purpose. He subsequently served in the English Army in Ireland and was to be initially disturbed that the Irish people were not following the English ways and was to hold onto the Dal Cuinn northern Ui Niaill territories in the Ulster Province for 40 years after 125.Shane O Niall’s murder, by negotiation and eventually War. He was to ally with his Dal Cuinn northern Ui Niaill Cenel Conaill kinsman, Aedh Ruadh / Red Hugh O Donnell to drive the English out of Ireland brought about by Elizabeth 1st's continuing ethnic and religious oppressive policies in Ireland of Slash and Burn anything Irish Catholic, that was to create 6 Rebellions in Ireland during her reign.
Later in the early 17th Century AD James 1st the French Stuart English King, had all of the northern Gaelic Milesian Chiefs Attainted (Off with their Heads), and they were then either forced into exile or killed, and 3,500,000 acres of their Irish territories were confiscated and non - Catholic English and Lowland Scotch were planted there. The Irish Septs in the north who were by then, also basically leaderless, were then driven off their land and up above the 600’ level to starve to death. Due to the lack of workers to work their newly acquired vast Estates, and although it was also now against English Law to use the Irish, many of the Irish Families were able to return to the vicinity of their ancient territories to then work the land for the English appointed Undertakers and Land Lords as tenants on their own land.
