Heremonian
Dal Cuinn
Ui Briuin Breifne
Sept
/ Family branch
that
included the Families of the
O Rourkes,
O Reillys, O Bradys and their Septs.
They originally had their territory in their
kingdom of Breifne
/ Hilly Country,
that took in
Co. Cavan now in
Southern Leinster and nearby
Co. Leitrim in the north -
west of the Connacht Province
along with a portion of the kingdom of Midhe /
Meath and also part of the Barony of Carbury in
Co. Sligo. It ran from Kells
in Meath to Drumcliff
in Co. Sligo and was
then part of the overall kingdom of Connacht
down to the reign of Elizabeth 1st when their
territory was
divided by the English into Co. Leitrim,
and Co. Cavan which
they also added to the Ulster Province
for their convenience.
The
O Reillys were to become
the
Kings
and
Princes
/ Tanaistes
of
Breifne
and Cath Aeda Finn,
and also the
Chiefs
of

O Rourkes -

but later had their
own territory on Loch Oughter
where they also had their fort at

Co. Cavan. They were the original
Gaelic Tuath at Tully

of
Tongragee
in the Barony of Clan Kee, and were also at Cootehill in
Co. Cavan. Under
the
constant
English ethnic, religious and
military
oppression
they were to last as a Gaelic Milesian
aristocratic warrior Family until the 17th Century
AD. Many of the
O Rourke Septs of their close kinsmen from
West Breifne / Breifne O Rourke
in Co. Leitrim held out
against the continual English ethnic and religious onslaught, but the
Breifne O Reillys being
in East Breifne
/ Co. Cavan on the eastern side of
Ireland were subjugated completely in the late 16th Century
AD. Co.
Cavan was
then
deemed
by the English to be part of
the Ulster Province
and
it was
included in the

3,500,000 acres of the
Heremonian Dal Cuinn

Ui
Niaill territories
and
the
foreign non - Catholic
plantations
of Ulster from 1608 AD onwards.
English and
Scottish non - Catholics were brought in
and the Irish
Septs
were
driven out above the 600' level to
starve to death.
In 1611 AD at Clon Kee in
Co. Cavan 64,377 acres of the land of the
Ui Briuin
Breifne O Reillys,
which was just on two thirds of the total
territory
held by them there, was
given
over
to the non - Catholic
Undertakers and planters
under James 1st the
Stewart English King,
with some of the
Undertakers receiving up to
5000 acres each.
Afterwards many members of the O Reilly Tuath
/ Family region went off to France to continue to fight against the English
oppression of all things Irish.
