ADAMS STOKES SYNDROME - ADRENOGENITAL  SYNDROME

ADAMS - STOKES SYNDROME\; Also see Arrhythmia and Bradycardia.

Symptoms: Mostly affects the Aged with sudden episodes of unconsciousness at any time during the day.

Cause: is a disturbance in the Heart's rhythm such as Ventricular Fibrillation or a temporary interruption of the Heartbeat / Asystole of 4 to 8 seconds causes unconsciousness in the erect position. More then 12 seconds cause unconsciousness in the recumbent position while up to 5 minutes leads to Cyanosios / fixed pupils and Neurological impairment that can become permanent.

ADDICTION: See also Drug Abuse. Symptoms: A Physical or Mental dependence on any drug or Physical and Psychological dependence. A better term is either, Drug Dependence or Drug Abuse.

ADDISON'S DISEASE: Adrenal Cortical Hypofunction / Chronic Hypoadrenocorticism.

Cause: The Adrenal Glands cease to function adequately and do not produce normal quantities of Steroid Hormones. These Steroids are important as they maintain the Biochemical balance in the Body. This Condition is also sometime created due to destruction of the Adrenals by Tuberculosis or a severe generalized Infection associated with Meningitis.

Symptoms: Weakness, Tiredness, Total Collapse, Vomiting, Weight Loss, Low Blood Pressure and an increase of Dark Pigmentation in the Skin.

ADENITIS: Cause: Inflammation of a Lymph Gland - Node scattered throughout various parts of the Body such as at the side of the Neck, in the Armpits and the Groin where they assist the Body's defence against Infection. Previously caused most commonly by Tuberculosis but now more commonly by Bacteria such as Streptococci - Sore Throat organisms or Staphylococci / Boil organisms. In the Neck it can also be caused by a Viral Infection.

Symptoms: The Glands become swollen and painful due to an Infection establishing its self and at times pus may even be formed in the Glands. Swelling in the Groin is usually due to Infection in the Leg or Sex Organs, in the Armpits due to Infection in the Arm or Breast, in the Neck / Cervical Adenitis is due to Infection in the Ear, Throat or in the Scalp.

Treatment: Treat the cause. Herbs: Poke Root,

ADENOCARCINOMA: Symptoms: A Cancer arising in Glandular Tissue. Mainly found in the Stomach, Large Intestine - Colon - Gall Bladder, Pancreas, Womb - Uterus - and Prostate Gland and occasionally in the Breast and Lungs and can spread to other parts of the Body via the Blood and Lymphatic System.

ADENOIDS: Along with Tonsils they form part of a ring of Lymphoid Tissue at the Throat entrance to form protective antibodies against micro - organisms from entering the Digestive and Respiratory Systems. They reach their maximum size by age 6 and from 9 or 10 they begin to shrink away and usually disappear by Adulthood.

Symptoms: Masses of Lymphatic Glandular Tissue / Swelling at the back of the Nose and Throat on the Back Wall of the Nasopharynx an inch or two above the area visible when the Mouth is open - owing to Glandular disturbance. Can cause Ear troubles and frequent Colds and Throat Infections. Like the Tonsils they swell and may cause Nasal obstruction making it difficult to allow air to pass in or out of the Nose creating a change in the Voice or snoring.

ADENOMA: Symptoms: A benign swelling or tumour of Glandular Tissue, opposed to Adenocarcinoma, which is a malignant tumour of the same type of Tissue. These are firm swellings formed of Cells that resemble the Tissues in which it has developed. They cause discomfort and slight pain, but are basically harmless and do not invade other Tissues in the Body and do not spread to other parts of the Body. Mostly found in the Adrenal Glands, Breast Bowel, Liver, Ovaries, Pancreas, and the Stomach. In the Bowel and Stomach it develops a stalk so that it grows into the cavity of the Organ as a polyp while in the Ovary it may become cystic - filled with fluid and in the Breast it usually contains a great deal of fibrous tissue / Fibroadenoma.

Treatment: They should be removed surgically as some may eventually evolve to become malignant.

ADHESION: Symptom: An abnormal band of Tissue that develops between two Internal Organs especially in the Abdominal Cavity.

Cause: due to Inflammation that can develop following a severe Infection such as Peritonitis or more commonly after a surgical operation as internal scar tissue and interfere with the function of the Body Organs.

ADIPOSE TISSUE: Is the layer of round Cells full of Fat, which mainly lies immediately under the Skin acting as an insulator and a source of Body Energy / fuel, and it is also found in other parts of the Body. It is not evenly distributed, but thick in the parts liable to sudden pressure such as the Buttocks and Feet acting as a shock absorber. It is also present in the Bone Marrow where it supports the Arteries and Veins around the Heart and Lungs. This is to cushion, support and warm the Intestines, to protect the Kidneys and to prevent damage by sudden shock or jarring to the Joints and Muscles. Excess Adipose Tissue can be dangerous, especially around the Heart adding weight and impeding movement, while around the Lungs it can restrict Breathing and also affect the action of the Heart.  Excess Fatty deposits can be avoided by a good normal natural diet and exercise.

ADRENAL GLAND - Suprarenal Glands: Two tiny masses that lie immediately above the Kidneys at the back of the Abdominal Cavity and are divided into separate zones the Outer Cortex and an Inner Medulla. The Outer Cortex is essential as it produces Cortisone Hormones / Steroids of which some metabolize Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins Potassium and Sodium and others for Sexual development, and to maintain Bodily strength. If not functioning properly Addison's Disease can result in extreme lethargy and weakness leading onto death, treatable now with Adrenal Steroid Hormones. The Medulla of the Gland is entirely separate in its function as part of the Sympathetic Nervous System preparing the Body for physical activity through the release of Adrenaline / Epinephrine. This prepares the Blood Vessels, Heart and Muscles for instant action such as anger, excitement, fear or sexual desire.

ADRENOGENITAL SYNDROME: Symptoms: Mainly a tendency to masculine characteristics in Female Children and Adults with excessive hairiness and enlargement of the Clitoris and precocious Puberty in Boys including abnormal enlargement of the Penis and sometimes High Blood Pressure.

Cause: Overactivity of part of the Cortex of the Adrenal Glands that produce Steroids to maintain the Biochemical balance of Tissues and have effects on the Sex Organs to promote Male characteristics.
