Treatment: Give Seaweed Meal to restore good health and good Hoof growth and ensure Tetanus shots are current. Cause: Abscesses, Bruised Soles, Corns, Cracks, Low Hoof Quality, Seedy Toe, Slow Growth, Thrush, Wall - Separation etc. Abscess: caused by close nails, Corns, Punctures to the Soles & Under Sole Bruising. Symptoms: The Artery running down the inside of the Leg pulsates and is distended, which indicates Inflammation of the Hoof Capsule. (Feel above the Fetlock Joint.) Treatment: Find the Abscess with Hoof testers and release the Infection by making a tiny drainage hole only. Bath in hot Water twice a day using a large handful of Epsom Salts in 6 Litres of Water. Syringe out the drainage hole with Hydrogen Peroxide and then Poultice using plugs of cotton wool soaked in Castor Oil and bandage the whole Foot to prevent dirt from entering. N.B: Even if a drainage hole is not made the Foot should still be bathed in a hot Tub. Quick action may prevent the Abscess from breaking out on the Coronet Band, and continue treatment until O.K. up to 10 days. *Feed a heaped Tablespoon of dried granulated or freshly crushed Garlic twice a day for a 450 kg Horse for 2 weeks. If the Abscess re - occurs treat with a Blood cleansing Herbal mixture for 12 weeks to end the Infection and provide Copper to prevent it re - occurring. Brittle - Poor Horn - Slow Growth: Treat the same as for Cracks. Bruised Sole: Flat Footed, Thin Soled Horses are more prone to Bruising and it is caused by Excessive work on Hard Ground, Poor Fitting Shoes and Stones. Corns: A Bruise that occurs between the Wall and the Bar. The Lameness shows up worse on Hard Ground and is less obvious on Soft Ground. Could be also intermittent or worse on turns or show up as a restricted Stride especially on turns with a willingness to extend the stride. Treatment: Same as for Abscesses if the Corn is Infected. Dose with 1ml Homeopathic Arnica 6c Internally hourly for 3 x hours as soon as the problem occurs, followed by a dosage 2 to 3 times a day for at least a week. (This is not the same product as Arnica Ointment or Tincture, which should not be used Internally.) Corns that are not Infected: Apply Arnica Ointment topically as well. Cracks: Grass (Vertical Upwards) Sand (Coronary Band Downwards) - See also under Cracks. Foot Rot - Copper needed to balance the diet. Hardened - Dehydrated Foot: Usually caused by Drought - making it Oval rather than round and also undershot at the Heels increasing the pressure on the Sensitive Lamellae and the Bones in the Feet causing Shrinkage of the Pedal Bone, narrowing of the Heels and distortion of the Side Cartilages of the Hoof. The Weight Bearing surface then moves forward, leaving the Heels poorly supported. General Foot Care: Water to soften as although Oils reduce Water Loss they also restrict water flow into the Hoof Wall and also into the Sole from outside the Hoof. N.B: Hooves need water not Oil. Hoof moisture comes from the Blood supply of the Hoof. High evaporation and restricted Circulation create dryness of the Hoof. This occurs especially in dry years when the Hooves are not their natural shape. Normal Hooves are short and flexible with a broad Frog with the Bars Parallel to the Frog and a round Hoof not Oval. Weight is carried by the Bars, the Frog, the Sole and the Walls. The Sole should be slightly dished with the disconnected part of the Heel adjacent being short. N.B: Natural wear keeps the Hooves short and the Soles and Bars thin, with the Frog broad due to weight bearing and the Hoof expands. Nail Prick: - See under Nail Prick. Seedy Toe - The Wall separates at the Toe due to Anaerobic Bacteria getting in - See under Seedy Toe. Thrush: Is an accumulation of black, foul smelling moist material in the clefts of the Frog. - See under Thrush. White Line Disease: The Wall separates at the Quarters with a cheesy substance occurring in the Hoof Wall - See under White Line Disease.
