FISTULOUS Wither - Horses: Symptoms: Begins with small Sores on the Withers.

Cause: Initial damage by Saddle or rugs and Brucella Abortus - a Zoonoose - Infects the sight. Also affects Humans so get the Vet immediately.

Treatment: Give Vitamin C either Orally or by Injection to assist the control of Infection. N.B. Do not come into contact with the Wound if you have any Cuts on your Hands. 

    

FLATULENCE: Cause: Produced in the Intestine by undigested Carbohydrates instead of being broken down in the Stomach, as some starches enter the Small Intestine intact were the Enzymes necessary to digest the two specific Carbohydrates, Raffinose and Stachyose are not produced. They just continue to sit there until the Bacteria that normally inhabit the Bowel ferment them and release the Gas. Eating too rapidly, over eating or eating hard to Digest foods and Stress and check also for food allergies also.

Treatment: To reduce Flatulence you must soothe the Digestive Tract and use Carminative Herbs. Use Carminative Herbs to flavour Starchy dishes especially those made with Beans. A mixture of Chamomile, Caraway, Dill, Fennel, Lemon Balm - Melissa and Peppermint and sweeten with Liquorice. If you are eating less Meat, fewer - Fats and more Carbohydrates, especially Beans, then you will produce more Gas but despite this, being Normal is passing Gas 8 -20 times every hour of the day. Put a hot water bottle on the Abdomen. Acidophilus Yoghurt may also assist. Take 2 x teaspoons of Apple Cider Vinegar and 1 x teaspoon of Honey before each meal. Beans: are the highest foods containing Raffinose and Stachyose and of these the highest are Black - Eyed Peas, English Peas and Soybeans other Legumes also contain them including Black Beans, Lima Beans & Pinto Beans. Herbs: Allspice, Basil, Bitters, Cayenne, Caraway, Chamomile, Cloves, Comforting Blend, Coriander, Corn Mint, Caraway, Dill, Fennel, Horse Balm, Horseradish, Parsley, Peppermint, Sage and Thyme. Gas relieving herbs contain the compounds, Camphor, Carvone, Eugenol, Menthol & Thymol. Also the Carrot and Mint Family of Herbs are Carminatives -  Aniseed, Basil, Bergamot, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Coriander, Garlic, Ginger, Hyssop, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Nutmeg, Onion, Oregano, Rosemary, Savory and Tarragon.  

 

FLEAS - Plague - spray carpets and mattresses with a strong Mint Infusion or 3 blocks of Camphor dissolved in 2 x Cups of Methylated Spirits and vaccum them up when they come to the surface. Pets: Treat Internally with Garlic or a few Wormwood Leaves in their food. Bathe in a Fleabane Infusion or add a few drops of Pennyroyal to the water or rub directly into the food. Spray with Pyrethrum.  

 

FLIES - Herbs: Basil,  

 

FLU - See Influenza.

 

FLUID - Retention - Oedema - The majority of sufferers from this Condition are Women as just before Menstruation Fluid is retained, Breasts are painful and Ankles and Fingers can become swollen.

Treatment: Use Diuretic foods - Apples, Carrot, Celery, Cucumber, Dandelion, Leeks, Parsley, Parsley Piert, Pineapple and Watermelon. Drink more Water - 6 to 8 glasses a day. Avoid all Salted / Sodium Chloride foods. Include plenty of fresh Fruit and Vegetables in the Diet. Reduce Weight by exercising. Vitamin B6 and Sodium Phosphate are Nutrients with Diuretic properties and can remove excess fluid. Raise the end of the bed higher then the Head and massage for Lymphatic drainage. Use Salt Packs on any swellings. Ankles: Avoid tight shoes, very hot bathes or Nylon Stockings. Eyelids: Apply Parsley Tea. Face: Chamomile and Witch Hazel. Feet: Massage with Rosemary Oil. Legs: Cypress and Lemon Oils. Herbs: Apples, Celery, Cucumber, Dandelion Leaf, Burdock, Cleavers, Fleabane, Juniper, Nasturtium, Rosemary, Shepherd's Purse, Tonic Blend & Wormwood. Formula: Celery, Dandelion, Vitamin B6, Water - 6 glasses a day, Low Sodium diet.  

 

FORGING: Horses: Symptoms: Clacking of the Back Feet on the front Feet - Requires proper shoeing.  

 

FOUNDER - Horses: Cause: Similar to Laminitis - Excess of Phosphates in the diet making the Horse acutely Magnesium deficient.

Treatment: The diet is either too low in Magnesium, or too high in Phosphates draining the System of Magnesium.

Symptoms: Hardening Tissue around the Neck, the top of the Tail and down the Shoulder. (Not to be confused with Fat, which is Soft - You cannot stick your Fingers into a foundered Horse.) The Feet get hot with tremors passing down the Legs and unwilling to move and stands with all Feet bunched together beneath it to alleviate the pain. Build up of this hard Tissue may take weeks or months to cure.

Treatment: 450kg Horse - In the short term it is relieved by a drench of 1kg of Epsom Salts - Magnesium Sulphate dissolved in as little water as possible and move the Horse about for an hour. If a Stream is handy walk the Horse in it as it gives even better relief. Further Treatment: Give 1 x Tablespoon of Epsom Salts daily for the first 3 - 4 days only, as well as 1 x Tablespoon of Magnesite or Dolomite in the Feed and after a week reduce to 1 x Dessertspoon full. Pony: 2 Doses an hour apart of 1/2 kg of Epsom Salts by drench. N.B: In the long term Epsom Salts demineralise and damage the area covering the Kidneys. Better to add either Magnesite - High Magnesium Dolomite - or straight Dolomite to the feed. Prevention: Regular Exercise and a sensible Diet.  

 

FRECKLES - Skin Blemishes - Treatment: Fade with Ladies Bedstraw Cream, Calendula Juice, Leek or Lemon Juice. Internally: Nettle for the Skin blemishes.

 

FUNGAL - Infections - Includes Athlete's Foot, Jock Itch and Vaginal Yeast Infections.

Treatment: Herbs: Black Walnut, Chamomile, Garlic, Golden Seal, Henna, Lemongrass, Liquorice, Pau d' arco, Tea Tree and Turmeric. * Mixtures of Fungal Herbs almost always give a better Synergy working much better then single Herbs.
