NAIL PRICK - Horses: Varying Lameness. Treatment: Remove the Nail and flush out the hole with Venice of Turpentine after heating it up to make it runny. Also you can remove the shoe and treat as for Abscess.

  

NAILS - Spoon Shaped Brittle, Ridged White Spots: Diet too low in Iron, Silica, Zinc and Fatty Acids - Treatment: Iron, Silica and Zinc. Thin or Brittle Nails show a deficiency in the Body. When Nails are diseased the Body must be run down and the Blood Toxic. Spoon shaped Nails can indicate Iron deficiency. White Spots can indicate Zinc deficiency. Improve overall Health with a more Wholesome diet especially fresh greens, Fruit, Vegetables & Whole Grains. Take Tonic Tea and treat Nails Internally & Externally with Calendula. Herbs: Cod Liver Oil.  Dill: used as a Tonic due to it being rich in Minerals especially Potassium & Sulphur. Evening Primrose Oil: Silica: can be found in Alfalfa, Borage Flowers, Stinging - Nettle and Oat Straw. Strengthens Nails & Hair. Formula: Seaweed Meal, Silica, Evening Primrose Oil - 500mg Capsule twice a day, and Cod Liver Oil - 1000mg Capsule twice a day. 

NAPPY RASH - Cause: Usually a problem with the diet, Candida albicans / Thrush: Lactobacillus Acidophilus / Yoghurt and / or a little Tea Tree Oil diluted and applied directly to kill the infection and is best diluted in Glycerine. 1/3 Tea Tree Oil to 2/3 Glycerine applied externally with a cotton bud. Teething or a Wet Nappy. Powder the Baby's Bottom with Cornflower instead of Powder to which Zinc Oxide can be added or Apricot Kernel Oil mixed with Vitamin E or an Apricot E Oil to ease irritation. Expose the Baby's Bottom regularly to air and to a little Sunlight. Herbs: 1 Cup of Chamomile and 1 Cup of Elder Flowers covered in boiling water  - Cool & Strain and apply whenever Nappy is changed. Also use Calendula, Chickweed and Comfrey Ointments.

NAUSEA - Symptoms: Abdominal sensation that creates a feeling of wanting to Vomit and if so losing a good deal of Stomach Acid creating a burning sensation in the Chest & Throat. Causes: Infections of the Digestive Tract - Gastroenteritis - Inner Ear Disorders, Over indulgence in Alcohol or foods, Intestinal Parasites, Morning Sickness in Pregnancy, Motion Sickness, Emotional Stress and Toxic overloads on the Liver. Vomiting is often a good thing but treat if excessive and you have the dry heaves. Use a hot or cold Compress across the Stomach & Throat areas. Ginger Tea will assist with most types of Nausea especially Motion Sickness. Take a 5cm slice of Ginger Root, 1/4 Lemon, 500ml water, 1 Stick of Cinnamon broken, 4 - 5 Cloves and a dash of Nutmeg or Cardamon and simmer and drink whenever required. Crystallised Ginger or Ground Ginger on a Teaspoon of Honey also assists. If sick in the morning take 1 x grated medium Potato and 1/2 Apple or 3/4 Cup of Potato Juice. Herbs: Basil: to allay. Carminative Herbs: Stomach soothing herbs are used to treat Indigestion and Infant Colic but can also be used to treat Nausea including Chamomile, Dill, Fennel, Lemon Balm and any of the Mints. Make a Tea with a few teaspoons of one or more of these herbs. Coriander: Infuse the Seeds. Cinnamon: contains Catechins, which assist to relieve Nausea. Dill: in Pregnancy the Tea is used. Essential Oils: Aromatherapy can assist to relieve Nausea and Vomiting, Peppermint & Rosewood for Nausea - Black Pepper, Chamomile, Camphor, Fennel, Lavender, Peppermint and Rose for relieving Vomiting. Place a drop or two in a Tablespoon of Vegetable Oil and massage into the Chest so as to inhale the aroma easily. N.B: For External use only as the can be Toxic if ingested. Ginger: used to reduce Nausea as a Tea, or especially as Ginger Ale. (Not artificial.) N.B: If your Blood clotting ability is impaired due to Chemotherapy do not use during this treatment. Meadowsweet:  Peppermint Tea: is a powerful Anti - Spasmodic stopping Muscle Spasms in the Digestive Tract including those involved in Vomiting. N.B: Do not drink too much if Pregnant for large amounts may cause Miscarriage. Spirit of Balm: Slippery Elm Powder: 

NAVICULAR - Disease - Horses: Painful as the Blood supply to the extremities is Inhibited and if not treated will cause total Breakdown of the Foot. Treatment: Similar to Repetitive Strain Injury / RSI - in Humans and responds to the same treatment - Remove the Cause! Cause: Mainly due to bringing Horses into Concentrated work in arenas or yards without first utilizing roadwork and conditioning - see Horses - Conditioning. Treatment: Give the Horse 8000 mcg of Vitamin B6 and about the same of Potassium Phosphate tablets, both ground up and added to the feed and continue daily until relief. Then amend the diet to eliminate Salt as it inhibits Potassium and include Seaweed Meal and Apple Cider Vinegar as both contain natural Potassium. Put in Light work such as Walking on firm ground until the condition eases.

NEPHRITIS - Symptoms: Inflammation of the Kidneys with some Fever and Pains in the Back.

 

NERVOUS EXHAUSTION - Mainly due to Hard work or long time heavy Emotional demands. Try to find ways of reducing the Impact of every day Stress. Herbs: Borage, Skullcap, Liquorice, St. John's Wort, Wild Oats and Wood Betony. Tea: Mix equal portions of all the Herbs listed and put 3 - 4 teaspoons into a pot with a lid and add 2 1/2 cups of boiling water and steep for 10 minutes and strain. Drink 3 - 4 cups a day.

NERVOUSNESS - Horses: Affects the Gut, Lungs, Heart and Skin as the Nervous System becomes unbalanced.

Causes: Environment, Feed Intolerance, Handlers, Imbalance in the Body Systems, Inherited Behaviour, Occupation or Riders.  Girthiness: Is due to the memory of previous Pain, or can be Physical such as Unsoundness in the Spine, Ribs and Wither or discomfort coming from the Liver or Spleen. Nerve Fibers: Can be over - stimulated and produce Acid wastes in the Body, and many who are cranky as well as sore usually suffer from this, made worse by Inappropriate Feeding. Gut Signs: Excessive Droppings, Loose Manure, Excessive Urinations and can manifest into Ulcers & Scouring. Heart: Adrenalises easily and often takes a long time for the Elevated Rate to become Normal. Lungs: Horses do not breathe deeply and regularly while being ridden. Skin: Itchiness, Skin problems and scratching.

Treatment: Needs Vitamin B especially B1 / Thiamine and Magnesium and this can be achieved simply by feeding 1 x Tablespoon each of Brewer’s Yeast and Dolomite a day. Herbs: Chamomile: Specific for Gut and Skin reactors. Any Nervous Horse with loose manure needs this Herb and also reacts easily on the Skin to Iinsect Bites, Flies, Ticks or pressure. Add to Feed 1 x handful of Chamomile Flowers twice a day for a 450 kg Horse - or as a Tea to extract the medicinal qualities more fully. Hops: Part of a mixture to reshape Nervous Attitudes and Old Habits. For Horses whose Heart Rates rise when stressed but recover quickly. Mugwort: For Horses extremely sensitive and overactive to light, sight, smell, sound, touch, wind and Barometric pressure. Chestnuts, especially Thoroughbreds are prime candidates for this Herb. Passiflora: Use as part of a mixture for Horses who are anxious, apprehensive and never at ease and for Mares including those being treated for Hormone Conditions. Skullcap: Extremely specific - and dosage rates are critical, and used only as part of a mixture for Horsesd who consistently and seriously Over - Adrenalise and do not recover quickly from their Nervous state. Their Heart Rate goes up and stays up until the Adrenaline works its way out of its System. Valerian: For Gut reactors who are opposite to those who require Chamomile. They hold their Muscles tightly and thereby tighten the Internal Organs including the Intestines - Uptight and usually have Manure that is too hard, tight Muscvles and a tucked up Gut and may be prone to Tying Up and to Impaction Colic. This Herb allows the Horse to relax his whole Body after work and let down in the Gut. N.B: Do not give to Horses who are prone to loose manure or scouring as it will make them worse. It is also used as a Sedative for Competition Horses and is on the swabbing list. Vervain: For Skin reactors, Itchiness, Sensitivity to Biting Insects, Lumps, Rashes, Sores etc. Usually for those who Sweat profusely when Nervous or Tremble and Shake. May also be Impatient, Fiddly and Fussy, with the Veins standing out when Nervous. Usually over - conscientious with too much Nervous Energy beforehand. N.B: Nervine Herbs work best when within a mixture with Bach Flower Essences and other herbs to treat the whole Horse as all of the Horse's Metabolism must be brought into balance to be permanently effective. Treatment should be over a Full Blood Cycle  / 12 weeks. St. John’s Wort: can be used Externally as part of the treatment for Skin Conditions. Other Nervous Conditions: Atrophy - Muscle wastage, Azoturia - Tying Up, Dehydration, Digestive Conditions, Scouring, Stringhalt etc. Compound Infusion: Humulus - 1, Mistletoe - 3, Wild Lettuce - 2, Passiflora - 2, Hawthorn - 2, Scullcap - 1, Motherwort - 2, Fucus - 4.

 

NERVOUS TENSION - Symptoms: Bouts of sudden Irritation and resentment, loss of Confidence and Fits of Depression.  In youths seen as Eczema or Psoriasis, are withdrawn, or exhibit an Inferiority Complex to be conceived as Shyness or Indifference. Causes: Among the causes is usually Loneliness - seek out new horizons and friendships in matters of mutual interest to break any sequence of Degenerative Thoughts. Herbs: Ginseng / Nervine, Sedative & Stimulant action required. Thyme: as a Bath: 200gm of Thyme for a full bath to regain strength and for restful Sleep. Formula: 0.3mg. Aneurin Hyd., 45mg Kelp, 15mg Hops, 45mg. Motherwort, 2.5mg. Nicotinamide, 0.5mg Riboflavin, and the aqueous extractives of 45mg. Limetree, 45.mg. Passiflora, 45mg. Scullcap, 90mg. Vervain & 45mg. Wild Lettuce.

 

NETTLE RASH - Often caused by an Allergy such as to Strawberries. Herbs: Internally: Heartease or Nettle Tea. Externally: Chickweed or Heartease Tea. Ointments: Chickweed and Hypericum.

 

NEURALGIA - Symptoms: Agonizing recurrent Pain in the Face or sometimes in other parts of the Body. Hot Compresses. Place Hands in a basin of hot water and Increase the heat until relief occurs and no more reaction. Change to natural diet and lifestyle. Add Oats to the diet and the bath as a Tonic for the Nervous System. Herbs: Bedtime Blend: Cayenne: Hops: Thyme: Used also for Facial Neuralgia. Put the herb in a Pillow and sow up combined with Chamomile & Yarrow and place on the effected parts and also drink 2 x cups Thyme Tea during the day. Use a Pillow made up of Chamomile, Thyme and Yarrow.  Use Oils of Hypericum, Lavender and Rosemary. Valerian:  

NEURITIS - Symptoms: Very Severe pains in the Sheathes of the Nerves, which can cripple for a limited period with some Anxiety and Insomnia. Compound Infusions: Jamaican Dogwood - 1, Humulus - 3, Scullcap - 1, Chamomile - 2.

 

NEUROPATHY - Symptoms: can be a fluctuating aching, deep, burning, pricking or sharp pain or a combination of either of these.

Cause: A degenerative change has occurred in the Nerve or Nerves affected by, Injury, Inflammation, Nutritional deprivation or Toxic poisoning. Peripheral Neuropathy gives a feeling of a glove or stocking feeling to the effected area with a Muscular weakness variable in severity with the affected Muscles being slack with a loss of the Tendon reflexes. The Skin there becomes thin and shiny and there could be excessive sweating in that area, all due to the disordered conduction pathway of the Nerve supplying that particular area.

Treatment:  is to control the pain and protect the weakened Muscles from stretching and Atrophy - excessive wasting - Heat assists including warm baths, passive action, massage and other forms of physical therapy. A well - balanced natural diet is also necessary. 

 

NIGHTMARES - What we eat effects how we Sleep. Light meals of a night. Refrain from late night snacks. Take warm foot baths or Epsom Salts bath before retiring. Herbs: Add a few drops of Lavender Oil to the bath or in the Pillow. Drink soothing herb Teas before retiring such as Bedtime Blend - see Therapies and Chamomile. Rub a few drops of Rosemary Oil into the Temples when awaken by Nightmares. Rescue Remedy and other Bach Flower Essences are also effective. 

NOSE BLEED - Place a cold Compress on the back of the Neck and one on the Forehead and sit up straight. Apply fresh raw Chicken if serious. Herbs: soak cotton wool in Witch Hazel and put a small plug up the Nose. Or use a plug of Calendula Ointment. Gather fresh Nettle Leaf and press against the Palate immediately. Shepherd's Purse Tea is a much gentler remedy.
