PLEURISY / Also see Pneumonia -- Symptoms: Pains in the side of the Chest that become worse by Deep Breathing with some Fever and a painful Cough. Treat as for Fever and Influenza. Use a hot Linseed Poultice or a Compress using an Infusion of Cayenne over the whole of the Chest. Drink only Juices for the first 2 days especially Carrot Juice then take Vegetable broth and Bran - 2 Tablespoons Bran in 500ml of boiling water, simmer for 15 minutes and strain. Dosage: 1 cupful 3 - 5 times a day. * Plantain & Thyme Tea should be drunk as hot as possible and sip slowly. If Acute drink 1 cup every hour. Herbs: Borage, Cayenne, Comfrey, Garlic, Mullein, Plantain, Sage, Thyme and Violet.

 

PNEUMONIA - Symptoms: Shivering, pains in the Chest and Vomiting with difficulty Breathing and a rising Temperature with red brown Sputum.

Cause: An Infection deep in the Lungs, which is the leading cause of death among the Infectious Diseases and high on the list overall of death causing Conditions. It can be due to Influenza, which sometimes develops into Pneumonia especially in the elderly or Hospital acquired Infections in those who are already Ill from other causes who develop Pneumonia due to their weakened Immune System. (The Bacteria that causes Pneumonia is abundant in Hospitals.) Those at risk are those affected by Alcoholism, Cancer, Cirrhosis, Heart or Kidney failure, Sickle Cell Disease, Spleen disorders or recent Organ transplants.  It can also be caused by Fungi, Protozoa or Viruses. Herbs: Astragalus - Huang Qui: is an Asian Immune booster similar to Echinacea and can be combined with it to get a stronger action. Baikail Skullcap Root: is closely related to Skullcap and has a broad spectrum anti -Microbial action and it inhibits Flu Viruses and several Pneumonia causing Fungi. Mix this herb with Barberry, Goldthread, Goldenseal, Oregon Grape and Yellow Root as they are all anti - Biotic herbs. This herb usually available in Chinese Herb stores. Dandelion: is effective against Bronchitis, Pneumonia and Upper Respiratory Infections. Cook the Greens and Roots and drink the Juice that remains after the Greens are cooked or drink the Tea made from the dried herb or take in Capsules. Echinacea: used to enhance the Immune System to fight all sorts of Bacteria, Fungi and Viruses with Teas & Tinctures used to treat Bronchitis, Colds and Flu. Take a teaspoon or two of Tincture in Juice or Tea several times a day. Garlic: 6 - 10 Cloves of chopped Garlic a day along with Echinacea if Pneumonia is suspected, as it is used to treat Digestive Tract and Respiratory Infections. Goldenseal: contains two broad - spectrum anti - Microbial constituents, Hydrastine & Berberine. Use a Tincture and follow the package directions while there are other herbs with a similar action such as Barberry, Goldthread, Oregon Grape and Yellow Root. Honeysuckle: used to treat Bronchitis, Colds and Flu. The Flower Extracts are strongly active against many kinds of Bacteria and Viruses. In Summer boil a cup of Flowers in a cup of water then strain the Tea before drinking. In Winter you strip off the old dried Leaves from a Vine and use to make a Tea or combine with Forsythia as it also contains several potent Anti - Septic and some Anti - Viral compounds. Tea: Use bare Twigs of Honeysuckle & Forsythia and sweeten with Lemonade Powder. Onion: closely related to Garlic with many similar Sulphur containing compounds. Onion Soup: is used for Respiratory Conditions including Pneumonia. Chicken Soup: used for treating Bronchitis, Colds, Flu and Pneumonia with Garlic and Onions added in. Osha: similar to a Dill or Parsley plant it is used to treat all manner of Respiratory Conditions including, Asthma, Bronchitis, Colds, Hay Fever, Influenza, Pneumonia and Tuberculosis. Chew on the root. Pleurisy Root: Sundew: contains Plumbagin, which inhibits several of the Bacteria that can cause Pneumonia and also a Cough Suppressant. Dosage: 2 teaspoons of the Tincture a day to treat Respiratory Conditions including Pneumonia.  

 

POISON BITES / Snakes, Spiders and Ticks. - Horses: Treatment: Rub Sodium Ascorbate Powder well into the site of any Poison bite site to nullify the Pain. Snake Venom: Give massive doses of Vitamin C immediately - the quicker the better, if is left for any time the more lasting the damage. Examine the Eyes, and the Pupils will be fully enlarged so that the whole Eye appears Black. Treatment: Inject Vitamin C 50cc / 25 grams into the Muscle on each side of the Neck and repeat in one hour ‘s time if no result occurs. This is safer then an Oral Dose due to the Horse being unable to swallow. Also Intravenous Injections will not work as the Veins collapse in shock and cannot be located. Keep Warm. A Blood Test will reveal the type of Snake if necessary. N.B: Suitable for all Snakes including Tigers. Spider Bites: produce swellings at the Bite sight.

Treatment: Give Vitamin C by Injection or Mouth if the Horse can swallow - 20 grams (40 cc) or more if desired. It can take several days to go down. Continue with 1 x Tablespoon of Vitamin C in the feed until cleared. Ticks: Produce a Coma and Death.  Give Vitamin C as for Snakebite even if in a Coma and this will bring it around. Remove the Tick with a lighted cigarette on its rear end or use Alcohol. It is wise to keep Injectable Vitamin C on hand (Store below 15 degrees.) or give regularly 1 x Tablespoon of Vitamin C in the feed. Dogs in Tick infested areas should receive 1 x Teaspoon a day. 

 

POISONING - Honey and Milk act as neutralising agents. N.B: IF the Poison is caustic do not induce Vomiting. If there is a need to induce Vomiting use a strong solution of Mustard - 1 Teaspoon of Dry Mustard to 3 Tablespoons of water Charcoal Capsules or the Powder dissolved in water is effective. Take enough Charcoal to absorb the amount of Poison ingested.

Horses: Signs: Foaming of the Mouth, strange smell in the Mouth and Collapse.

Treatment: Give oral doses of Dolomite and Vitamin C Powder (3 x Tablespoons in as little water as possible) which will detoxify. Call the Vet and do not give Liquids. Inject 25 cc of Vitamin C. If no Vet available keep the Horse quiet and continue the treatment, adding 2 x Tablespoons of Vitamin E Powder and give above dose every 3 hours. Mix ingredients with a little Milk or White of an Egg - After 3 doses continue with Vitamin C & E. Improvement will be noted within an hour if successful after starting the treatment. Phosphorus: Leaves a sweet smell on the Breath as does Arsenic and the patient will show distress and crave water as its insides are Burning.  Hormones & Anti - Botics: From eating processed foods containing these included in the feed for other Livestock. Symptoms: (These can appear immediately or several months later.) Dark Brown Urine, Occasional Muscular tremors, Posterior weakness & profound Sweating. These can create permanent damage to the Heart Muscle, but the Toxicity can be arrested in the early stages by removing the Stomach contents and feeding Mineral Oil. (There will be Liver damage.) Treatment: Give Rescue Remedy and call the Vet.

   

POISON IVY, Poison Oak and Poison Sumac - Symptoms:  Some people develop a nasty, persistent, blistering rash after contact while others are immune to it and Calamine Lotion is usually used to treat it. Cause: they contain an irritating Oil, Urushiol that create sensitivity to it by binding to Skin Cells and triggers an irritating rash. Herbs: Aloe Gel: inside the leathery leaves assists to treat Burns and other Skin Conditions and to soothe and heal the rash from contact with poisonous plants. Treatment: Cut open a fresh Leaf and wipe the Gel onto the affected area. Jewel Weed: contains Lawsone a chemical that binds o the same Molecular sites ion the Skin as Urushiol and if applied quickly it beats the Urushiol to the sites locking it out. Although the Leaves contain Lawsone there may be more in the reddish protuberances extending out from the lower stem near the ground level. Apply the Juice from the crushed red knobs to obtain better protection. Plantain: make a Poultice from the fresh Leaves and apply. Soapwort: you can wash the effected area with soap and water to get rid of the Urushiol or you can try the Juice of this herb wash it off or any other plant containing Saponins might work even better including Gotu Kola, Horse Chestnut, Liquorice, Seneca Snakeroot, Soapbark and Rose Leaves. N.B: Only use externally, as Horse Chestnut and Seneca Snakeroot are inedible.  

    

POOR - PICKY APPETITE - Horses: Usually poor conversion of food but the opposite action, huge Appetites can also be caused by the same problem. Check for Worms or Highly Processed Food. Change to natural food and supplements and carry out a 12 Week course of the right Herbal Treatment. N.B: Fenugreek is one of the best for this but it has a high Oestrogen content and should not be fed to Horses who are suspected of having Imbalanced Hormones. Pancreatic function is to do with Appetite and food conversion and to stimulate this Organ use Fennel as part of a mixture of Herbs to balance this. Good Doers need only plain food. An Underactive Thyroid could also cause loss of Appetite or Condition.

  

PREGNANCY - Do not consume Alcohol as it may result in Hyperactivity, Short attention span, and Emotional Conditions in the Baby and deformities such as Alcohol Foetal Syndrome due to consuming Alcohol during the first 3 months of Pregnancy. Drugs & Smoking can also cause many Conditions in the Mother and Baby. Vitamin E may assist in preventing habitual abortion / miscarriage and foods such as Wheat Germ , whole Grains and cold pressed Vegetable Oils should be included in the diet as these are high in Vitamin E. Do not eat new Potatoes or any with green spots if Pregnant as they may contain Solanine a Toxin that causes miscarriages. Exercise regularly as it tones the Muscles, improves Circulation, assists with weight control and can make delivery easier. Vitamin B6 may assist to relieve the symptoms of Morning Sickness, including Nausea and Vomiting but do not take high doses late in Pregnancy this might shut off Breast Milk. Herbs: Ensure a natural Holistic Lifestyle and use Herbs in moderation only for gentle assistance. Black Haw - Cramp Bark: used to treat painful Menstrual Cramps and threatened miscarriage and discomforts of Pregnancy. Blue Cohosh: used to induce Labor as it contains Caulosaponin a powerful stimulator of Uterine contractions. 20 -30 drops of the herb Tincture is used. N.B: Do not overdose on the herb as it could cause miscarriage, discuss with your Doctor before using. Delivery Herbs: Tea: 2 parts each of Holy Basil, Lavender and Lemon Balm and 1 part each of Borage and Pansy Flowers and alternate this with Raspberry Leaf Tea. Dill: the Tea is used for Nausea in Pregnancy. Ginger: relieves the symptoms of Morning Sickness. Jute: one of the best natural sources of Folate, 32 parts per million on a dry weight basis, and is naturally occurring for of Folic Acid and the B Vitamin that assists to prevent the often fatal Spinal malformation Spina Bifida. Lentils also contain fairly high levels of Folate. Miscarriage Prevention Herbs: 2 parts Black Haw, 1 part False - Unicorn Root and 1 part Wild Yam. Mix the Tinctures using 20 drops of Black Haw and 10 drops each of False Unicorn Root and Wild Yam. Drink the mixture 2 - 4 times a day or if there is trouble with Spotting take every 2 hours until it stops. Tea: 2 tablespoons of Lemon Balm and Partridge Berry Leaves and 1 Tablespoon each of Stinging Nettles, Oatstraw and Raspberry Leaves steeped in a quart of boiling water and drink up to 3 cups a day. Parsley: contains Apiole a Uterine stimulant and Folate. N.B: Do not eat large amounts of Parsley while Pregnant as it will hurry things along by stimulating the Uterine contractions. Partridge Berry: made as a Decoction 2 - 3 weeks previous to and during delivery and is combined with Raspberry, Black Haw, Blessed Thistle, Liquorice or Sarsaparilla. Perineal Tears: use herbal Sitz Baths with Calendula, Yarrow Flowers and Comfrey Leaves added to the water. Peppermint Tea: relieves the symptoms of Morning Sickness by drinking 1 cup and eat a piece of toast before getting out of bed in the morning. Postpartum Herbs: especially after Cesarean sections - Use a Tincture of 3 parts Bupleurum, 2 parts Dandelion Root and 1 part each of Astragalus, Blessed Thistle and Wild Yam. Shepherd's Purse: 4- - 60 drops of the Tincture soon after birth to assist to stop bleeding as it constricts Blood Vessels. Spinach: is rich in Folate and may assist to prevent Spina Bifida and other related defects and is also high in Zinc, which is necessary to assist with Birthing and improve wound healing. Zinc usually is found in Meat. Soup: Use Spinach, Endive, Asparagus, Parsley, Okra, Pigweed and Cabbage and have whole wheat Bread with it as there is twice as much Folate in whole wheat in comparison to white bread. Raspberry Leaves: To strengthen the Uterus and the entire Reproductive System as well as decreasing Miscarriage and Premature birth use Raspberry Leaf Tea. Taken throughout the Pregnancy but take at least 1 cup a day during the last 3 months - Sweeten with Honey and Lemon. St. John's Wort Oil: soothes when rubbed on the Perineum, the tear prone area between the Vagina & Anus during Labor and after delivery it soothes, due to its Anti - Inflammatory action easing burning and swelling and speeds the healing of Perineal tears. Engorged Breasts: Apply a warm Cabbage Poultice. Labor: Raspberry Tea taken regularly makes Labor easier. Take Rescue Remedy at time of birth. Feverfew Tea cleanses the Womb. Use Oils of Lavender, Neroli and Rose. Lack of Iron: Take Molasses, Nettle, Spinach or Tonic Teas. Mastitis: Apply a Poultice of Comfrey and Linseeds, Phytolacca or Purslane or Phytolacca Ointment. Milk Fever: Apply Ice Packs. Milk Production: Aniseed, Borage, Caraway, Fennel, Fenugreek, Milk Thistle, Parsley and Purslane. Milk Flow - To Stop drink Sage Tea 3 times a day. Morning Sickness: Use Chamomile, Cinnamon, Lemon Balm, Peach Leaf & Peppermint Tea. Also Ginger: 3 times a day, Peppermint Tea: 1 cup in morning before getting out of bed and then 1 cup 3 times a day, Red Raspberry Leaf Tea: 3 cups a day during the 3rd trimester as an Uterine Tonic and to relieve the pain of delivery. Sore - Cracked Nipples: Use a grated Carrot Poultice, Carrot Moisturising Cream or Lanolin. Formula: Folic Acid: 0.8mg a day during Pregnancy due to the requirement for it doubling during Pregnancy, Calcium: 1000mg - 1500mg a day and 2000mg during Lactation as Calcium requirement also doubles during Pregnancy, Magnesium: 500mg a day, Iron Phosphate 15mg 3 times a day, Multivitamin Mineral: 1 Tablet a day, Evening Primrose Oil: 500mg x 1 Capsule morning and night.
