Co. Donegal in the north - west of the Ulster Province, They were the most prominent of the Cenel Conaill Septs in the 12th Century, after their kinsmen the O Mulroys / Muldory Sept. Due to the pressure from their expanding Heremonian Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niaill kinsmen, the Cenel nEogain Sept, they were to also have territory nearby in the south - west in Co. Sligo in the north - west of the Connacht Province. They had their beginnings at Kilmacrenan, and began their rise during the Middle - Ages, which then lasted up until the 14th Century AD, and they then continued on in a limited capacity for another 300 years until the total ethnic and religious English oppression under Henry V111 and his daughter Elizabeth 1st. Their last Chief was 126.Niall Garbh - the Rough O Donnell, with their male line then continuing on down through his younger brother 126.Aedh Buidhe - of the Yellow Hair O Donnell to Aed / Aodh O Donnell who was at one time still living in Dublin in Co. Dublin in the north - east of Southern Leinster. Their Inauguration Stone was at Doon Rock, two miles west of Kilmacrenan, and prior to 1540 AD none of their Kings or Chiefs were to ever pay homage to the English. In 1548 AD they founded a Franciscan Friary at Killydonnell / Cill O d - Ui Tomhrair in Co. Donegal where it’s bell was to end up in Loch Swilly. The "aged" 124.Aed Dubh - of Dark Complexion O Donnell / The O Donnell was appointed the first English Earl of Tyrconnell and his young son, 125. Aodh Ruadh / Red Hugh - of Red Complexion O Donnell eventually allied with 126.Aedh Dubh / Black Hugh O Niall, his Heremonian Dal Cuinn "northern" Ui Niall kinsman from the Heremonian Cenel nEogain Sept, and they held their territory then by negotiation and War. In 1597 AD 125.Aodh Ruadh / Red Hugh O Donnell / The O Donnell had his seat at the O Donnell Castle at Bally Shannon in Co. Donegal. The English had previously imprisoned him as a youth for many years in the Dublin Castle (The Devil's 1/2 acre) until he was eventually assisted by his kinsman and brother - in - law, 126.Aodh Dubh / Black Hugh O Niaill to escape and he joined in with him to try and drive the English out of Ireland. He was subsequently done away with by a professional English assassin in Spain, and his younger brother, 125.Rory O Donnell then took his place, but he too was then forced to flee when an Attainder was also taken out against all of the Gaelic leaders in Ulster. 3,500,000 acres of the territories of the northern Milesian Gaelic Families and the various other Irish Septs there were confiscated by the English and foreign non - Catholics were brought in and planted there with the Irish Families driven off up above the 600' level to starve to death.
