Cultivation: A smooth leafed shrub or small tree with purple Flowers and purple edges to the Leaves, found in Hedgerows and Woodlands. WAKE ROBIN (American) Arum triphyllum. USA. Actions: Expectorant. Cultivation: From the Arum Lily Family that grows in bold clumps. Product: the Root.

WALNUT / Juglans regia. Cultivation: Easy to grow. Product: Leaves and Skins. Used to Treat: Bath: add an Infusion of the Leaves to soothe the Nerves and promote Sleep. Cosmetics: used as a natural dye. Dye: The Skins also used as a natural dye for wool. WINTERGREEN / Gaultheria procumbens. North America. Actions: Aromatic, Astringent, mainly used as a Stimulant. Constituents: Menthyl Salicylate. Cultivation: A small procumbent shrub. Product: the Leaves only used as a Poultice, / and the Oil Externally as an Embrocation mixed with Raw Linseed Oil and Comfrey Oil to penetrate and warm. Can penetrate up to 10cm into Tissue carrying with it the healing qualities of the other Oils such as Almond or Olive Oil with which it is mixed. 

Used to Treat: Aches: the Oil is readily absorbed through the Skin. Amenorrhoea: Back Ache: Corns: Diarrhoea: as an Astringent to control. Ear Ache: Gums / Inflamed: as an Infusion of the Leaves as a Mouth Wash. Hangover: Head Ache: the Oil is readily absorbed through the Skin or the Leaves as an Infusion. WITCH HAZEL / Hammamelis virginiana. USA. *One of the most beneficial herbs. N.B: For External use only as it is highly Astringent and excellent for treating Bruising where the Skin is broken. The commercial distilled product sold in Supermarkets is not as effective as the Extract that can be used straight, diluted as a rinse or as an Ointment, depending upon the application. Actions: Anti - Septic, Astringent, Cleanser, Sedative, Styptic and Tonic. Constituents: Tannic Acid. Cultivation: A slender tree of modest growth. Product: the Bark, Leaves and Twigs used as a Tincture. 

Used to Treat: Blisters: with iced Witch Hazel. Bruises: as a soothing Compress.

Capillaries / Broken: to reduce the size. Complexion: dilute it and dab on with a moistened cotton ball after cleansing with a pure gentle soap.

Diarrhoea: under Professional  prescription.

Gums / Bleeding: grind up 3 - 4 Tablespoons of Witch Hazel Leaves and add to 1 litre of boiling water and strain through fine muslin and when cool rinse through the Mouth 3 times a day.

Face / Steam: combine equal parts of Witch Hazel, Lavender and Lemon Grass and gently simmer for 5 minutes and stand over the steam with a towel over the Head for 10 minutes to open the Pores and increase Circulation. Splash the Skin with a chilled Tonic of diluted Witch Hazel and Apple Cider Vinegar. Feet / Aching / Tired: rub the Soles with Witch Hazel and Lemon Juice to get the Circulation going or add Rosewater and Violet Oil into the Witch Hazel and massage into the Feet to relieve the strain and soothe sore Muscles or add 4 drops of Clove Oil to the Witch Hazel.

Actions: Anthelmintic, anti - Inflammatory, Bitter Tonic, Carminative, Deobstruent, Depurative, Digestive, Diuretic, Emmenagogue, Febrifuge, Stomachic and Sudorific. Constituents: Absinthin, Absinthol, Malates, Nitrate of Potassium, Resin, Succinic Acid, Tannin and Volatile Oil. Cultivation: A woody shrub to 80 cm high with a bitter sweet scent and grey green leaves covered in fine hairs. Easy to grow from the Seed in Spring or by division in Spring & Autumn tolerating a wide range of soils and likes semi - shade and cut back after flowering as it will inhibit the growth of plants nearby so give it plenty of room. Product: the whole herb above the ground and pick the Leaves whenever required, or if intending to dry then gather when in Flower. Place in draws to protect clothing or in kitchen cupboards to reduce Infections to food. Infusion: 2 x teaspoons of the Leaves per cup or take 1/2 to 1 teaspoonful 3 times a day.
