Cardamon - Cauliflower

CARDAMOM / Malabar Cardamom / Elettaria cardamomum - Wild / Ceylon and South - East Asia. Actions: Aromatic, Carminative, Sialagogue & Stimulant.

Cultivation: A boldly growing large reed - like plant of exotic appearance. Product: the Seeds are used and also used in Curries and Pastry for flavour.    

Used to Treat: Appetite: as a Tea to stimulate.                          Asthma:                     Breath - Bad: chewed to freshen after meals.                     Circulatory Conditions:

CARDAMOM APERITIFF / Used to Treat: Flatulence: Add Seeds to a bottle of Sherry and allow to steep for a few days and drink before a meal to reduce.

CARROT / Daucus carota - Main Use: To benefit the Liver & Gall as a Diuretic and Stimulant. NB: Excess Carotine kills off Vitamin D in the Body so take only 1 x glassful of any Vegetable Juice a day. N.B: All Vegetable Juices are highly concentrated and should be taken by the spoonful so that the Digestive Juices have a chance to react to the Complex materials involved. Constituents: Rich in Carotine (Vitamin A) Potassium and other beneficial substances. 

Used to Treat: Acne: finely grate 2 - 3 medium Carrots and apply the pulp and leave for 10 minutes then rinse off.                      Aging:                         Amenorrhoea: the Seed has Anti - Implantation activity.

Anaemia: the Juice in the morning Stimulates and Heals the Liver and purifies the Blood and assists with Anaemia.               Angina:               Asthma:               Bladder and Kidneys: Fresh Carrot Tops are beneficial. Take a handful and cover with boiling water, and allow to stand for 15 minutes and drink 1cup x 3 times a day before meals.

CASCARA SAGRADA / Cascara / Rhamnus purshiana  - Rhamnaceaea Family - Wild / Canada and U.S.A.

Main Use: Best known Laxative as a potent Stimulant with gentler action and is less likely to cause griping or Cramp like pain. N.B: Only to be used in acute situations and is not for long term use. N.B: Cascara should be taken last thing at night. N.B: A strong herb - Use only if the situation persists. N.B: The Bark must be a year old or can cause Intestinal Cramping. N.B: If Pregnant avoid using or any product containing it. Actions: Bitter, Laxative, Anti - Spasmodic and Hepatic Tonic. Increases Bowel, Colon, Liver, Gall Bladder, Stomach, Pancreas and Bowel secretions. It's action is to irritate the Colon Walls not stimulate the Bile flow from the Liver and Gall Bladder like the others. Can cause Griping and if so use a Carminative with it such as Aniseed, Peppermint or Ginger or combine it with Dandelion, Liquorice or Milk Thistle as well as Aromatic or Carminatives.  

Cultivation: A low growing small tree. Product: Use the dried Bark a year after harvesting in quill or powdered form or as a Tincture. Decoction: 1 to 2 x teaspoons of the dried herb per cup. Tea: 1 - 3gm of the Powdered Dried Bark, which is quite Bitter in a cup of hot water before going to bed. Tincture: Used as a gentle Laxative - use only 20 drops of the Tincture 3 times a day and work up to 1 to 2ml eventually. If more drastic action required then use ½ x teaspoon full 3 times a day. 

Used to Treat: Bowel Conditions: In small frequent doses restores the tone of the Bowel and has a lasting, permanent effect. Also useful for Bowel related Conditions in combination with Bayberry Bark, Rhubarb Root, Goldenseal and Raspberry Leaves as a lower Bowel Tonic.

Constipation - Persistent: only.                       Haemorrhoids: Used whenever Haemorrhoids are associated with Constipation and poor Bowel function.

 

CASCARILLA / Sweet Wood Bark / Croton eleuteria - Wild / West Indies & Bahamas. Actions: Stimulant & Tonic as it has a safe gentle action. Cultivation: A diminutive tree. Product: the Bark.

 

CASSIA / Cassia Bark / Chinese Cinnamon / Cinnamomum cassia - Wild / China. Actions: Anti - Spasmodic, Carminative, Stomachic & Tonic. Bark contains Tannins and Volatile Oils.

Cultivation: A strong growing evergreen tree a member of the Laurel Family that has a fragrant odour similar to Cinnamon but with a stronger taste. Product: the Bark and Buds. Bark pieces are used in Potpourri mixes and the Oil in Incense & Sticks. Used to Treat: Digestion: as it has a soothing and warming effect as a Tonic.

 

CASSIA / Cassia senna - Main Use: Constipation. Actions: A strong Cathartic - the Leaf is stronger than the Fruit in usefulness.

 

CASSIA PODS / Cassia fistula - Wild / East Indies & Egypt. Actions: Used as a gentle Fruit flavoured Laxative usually in a Compound with other Laxatives. Cultivation: A medium sized tree with yellow scented flowers. Product: the Pulp of the Fruit.

 

CASTOR / Ricinus communis. Used to Treat: Warts:                                         Wrinkles:

 

CASTOR OIL / Palmi Christi (Poisonous) Ricinus communis - Wild / Tropics. N.B: The Seed is very poisonous. Main Use: Strong Laxative - Purgative especially for Children and the Aged. Cultivation: The Oil is produced from a big shrub known as the Castor Bean. 

Used to Treat: Colic:                              Constipation:                         Eyebrows - Eye Lashes: to improve the condition of weak or overly short by applying nightly with a small brush.                Hair Conditions: as a rich Emollient natural remedy for delicate or weak Hair put a drop of Rosemary Oil in warmed Castor Oil or alternate application of Castor Oil and White Iodine for 4 days or the juice of a Lemon rubbed into the Scalp.

 Hair - Fragile: Warm 1/2 x cup of Castor Oil and massage well into the Scalp and comb through with a wide - toothed comb and then heat a damp towel in a slow oven and wrap about the Head and leave for 30 minutes until cool. This allows absorption of the Oil and is good for Split ends and shampoo with a mild Shampoo                              Intestinal Organs: to Tone.                              Itch: Used Externally.                   Ringworm: Externally.

CATMINT / Catnip / Nepeta cataria - Labiatae - Lamiaceae  - Wild / British Isles. Favourite plant of Cats.

Main Use: For Bronchitis, Colds and Flu. N.B: Do not use if Pregnant or Breast Feeding. Actions: Anti - Spasmodic, Astringent, Carminative, Strong Diaphoretic, Mild Sedative and Tonic.

Cultivation: An easy to grow procumbent grey - green plant with tiny scented soft hairy Leaves with small pinky - mauve or white - lipped flowers usually grown as an edging in gardens in a well - drained soil in full Sun. Grown from seed in trays to germinate between 20 - 30 degrees, or by tip cuttings and / or by root division in early Spring. Repels insect pests around the home. Harvest after the dew has dried at any time when well grown and  tie small bunches with string and hang upside down in a well - aired position and when dry strip the Leaves and store in an airtight container. Product: the Leaves, the whole herb above the ground and collect the Leaves and Flowers in the Summer. Infusion: 1 to 2 x teaspoons of the Dried Leaves per cup. Tea: useful for small Children as it is soothing and tranquillising. Tincture: 2 to 4ml x 3 times a day.
